The Central Victorian Veteran’s Cycling Club concluded the 2010/11 Summer Series with a Sunday morning event on March 6th worth double points. Sixty riders faced the starter at Emu Creek with half a dozen riders in both men’s and women’s sections capable of taking out the aggregate. The fine conditions and a light breeze caused few problems for the large bunches at starts of 1 ½, 2 ½, 4, 5 ½ , 7, 10, 12 and 15 minutes in front of scratch. The race was decided early on when the 4 minute bunch picked up the 5 ½ minute group at the turn-around and gathered in the next bunch half way along Axe Creek Road. It was only a matter of time before the rest of the field was swallowed up, the last three of Evelyn Keetelar, Jack Trickey and Bruce Tonkin being overhauled with about three kilometres to go. Behind this large group the scratch bunch had caught second and third scratch before the Exchange hill but the weight of numbers were against them in the concluding sections of the race. The main peloton broke apart on the final rise and a bunch of ten riders hit the home straight to fight out both the race and the series aggregate. The head wind dictated the finish with the winners being those who poked their noses into the breeze at the last possible minute. Ray Colwell (4 min) proved the best sprinter on the day to take the race and the men’s series aggregate ahead of Murray Rankin (4 min), Ricky Lovell (5 ½ minutes), Peter Harper, Daniel Barri, Russell Jenkins and Bruce Baldwin all off 4 minutes, followed by Bruce Tonkin, Chris Chambers and Mal Balnaves. First unplaced lady was Evelyn Keetelar who had a great series to take out the women’s aggregate. Fastest time once again was Tony Fitzpatrick. Men’s aggregate points were Ray Colwell 68, Tony Fitzpatrick 45, Martin Banfield 41, David Colwell 41 and Ken Hamilton 39. The women’s points were Evelyn Keetelar 27, Leigh-Anne Dynon 25, Wendy Bennett 23 and Aileen O’Brien 20. There is no club race next Saturday. The O’Brien Open will be held next Sunday morning commencing at 9:30 a.m. at Woodstock. This is one of the premier events of the Veteran’s calendar and more than 100 of the state’s best riders will front up, so if you haven’t entered it will be worth the trip to watch the race unfold. |

Almost 70 riders gathered in great conditions at Emu Creek for the last Wednesday night race of the Central Victorian Veteran’s Cycling Club’s Summer Series, sponsored by Valentini and Rossi. The big field was split into eleven bunches with gaps of a minute or minute and a half the order of the day. The fine conditions and light south-westerly wind saw all the bunches flying along Axe Creek on the way out to the turn-around. The third scratch bunch off 2 ½ minutes was the big early mover, picking up fourth scratch before the Eppalock School, and the by now large group rounded up the next two bunches before the Exchange Corner on the way home and the 10 minute bunch at the top of the hill. Up ahead of them the three front groups were doing a fantastic job to stay clear of the pursuing hordes and still held a clear break turning into the home straight. Back down the hill all the other bunches had come together except scratch and second scratch who lost out to greater numbers and made up little ground in the last few kilometres. Experience and guile proved the difference in the sprint to the line. Terry Wallace (13 min) was too strong for Pat Pontell (13 min) and Greg Chapman (11 ½ min) to take out the race. They were followed home in 4th place by Aileen O’Brien (11 ½), then Wendy Bennett (11 ½), Evelyn Keetelar (11 ½), Ricky Mitchell (16 ), Di Jane (13), Trevor Pell (11 ½) and Peter Kennedy (11) filled the remaining places. Sam Smagas was first unplaced lady and fastest time went once again to Tony Fitzpatrick. The final Summer Series race will be held next Sunday morning at Emu Creek commencing at 10:00 a.m. and will be followed by a barbecue and presentation of the men’s and women’s series aggregates, both of which are still wide open with the last race worth double points. Saturday’s event is graded scratch races at Newbridge commencing 2:00 p.m. |

A-GRADE |

Tony Fitzpatrick |
The highly successful Central Victorian Veteran’s Cycling Club’s Summer series continued this week with graded scratch races replacing the normal handicap event. Sixty-one riders were split into five divisions to contest the Bolton’s Office National sponsored races and all were keenly contested over the 34 kilometre course in warm and humid conditions. Experience proved to be the deciding factor in E Grade where the evergreen Jack Trickey took out the race from Pat Pontell and Aileen O’Brien. D Grade turned out to be a bit of a boilover when try rider Peter Hyett was first over the line but was ineligible to claim, leaving Geoff Graham to take the cash in front of Ken Hamilton and Graeme Lockwood. Russell Gilbey demonstrated that persistence pays off by launching a number of attacks in the C Grade event, the last of which ultimately proved to be successful. He was trailed home by Shane Bartley in 2nd place and Ray Colwell in 3rd. The B Grade race was a cracker as the bunch maintained a fast pace right from the outset which made it impossible for any breaks to succeed. The whole field rounded the final bend together which suited the fast and the cagy. Andrew Creek won the sprint from the experienced Shane Standfield with Hudson Crothers putting in a great effort to run third. As expected, the A Grade event turned into a race of attrition on the final climb up Emu Creek Road when the field shattered during a series of attacks. Tony Fitzpatrick continued his incredible run of wins over recent weeks to take out the race over Martin Banfield and Tony Jones who is slowly but surely returning to top form. There are two more Wednesday night races followed by the season finale on Sunday March 6th at 10:00 a.m. with the last race worth double points towards the men’s and women’s series aggregates. Saturday’s race is a thirty-five kilometre handicap at Woodstock followed by a General Meeting. |

Close to the strongest field for the year faced the starter for this week’s Central Victorian Veteran’s Cycling Club Summer Series race at Emu Creek. 69 riders fronted up to contest the Dale Lowe Signs sponsored event on Wednesday evening in absolutely perfect conditions. The field was split into ten bunches with large groups and even though small time differences were the order of the day, the field hadn’t come together at all at the turn-around. Things started to change on the run home as the very strong 5 ½ minute bunch started picking up bunches along Emu Creek Road and powered towards the finish. Behind them, the 4 minute bunch lost a few vital seconds when faced with a red flag at the Eppalock school corner and couldn’t regain momentum, being swept up by the combined scratch, 2 minute and 3 minute bunches at the top of Exchange Hill. At this stage the race consisted of two bunches with the front half holding about a minute’s lead over the scratch-led back half. The 5 ½ minute bunch prevailed to hold on to the lead and virtually clean sweep the places. Chris Chambers and David Colwell jumped away to take first and second places in a great effort. They were followed home by Bruce Baldwin, Leigh-Anne Dynon, Ricky Lovell (6 ½ minutes and the only place-getter outside the 5 ½ minute group) Peter Harper and Garry Murdoch. The fasted time was decided by millimetres with Tony Fitzpatrick pipping Andrew Pascoe on the line. Saturday’s race is the BART’nPRINT sponsored feature
race for January at Woodstock over 47 kilometres. |

This week’s race sponsor was Tyrepower and saw 47 riders out on Australia Day to contest the race. The back end of the field was very strong with a solid scratch bunch chasing 4 bunches with around 8 riders in each ahead. The front end of the field was a little thin being made up of bunches with only 3 or 4 riders. Limit started off at 13 minutes with 3 riders leading into the slight head wind. The strong 2nd scratch group worked well to bring in the 3rd scratch group before being caught by scratch. The added numbers gave this bunch the speed it needed to keep scratch away. The combined group soon accounted for the rest of the field as they built up numbers and speed towards the end of the race. The front end of the field failed to make an impression struggling for numbers and any solid speed. The combined 2nd scratch group managed to hold off scratch by around 100 meters into the final sprint and with a very strong finish it was Martin Banfield taking out 1st place, followed by Glenn Farrow in 2nd, Paul Dalton 3rd, Arnie Lindsay 4th, Mark Williams 5th, Chris Weatheritt 6th, Paul Dynon 7th and Mick Anderson 8th, First Unplaced Lady was Cait Fraser and fastest time was Justin Mollison. Nest weeks race is sponsored by Valentini & Murphy Accountants. |

The second race for the series sponsored by Pilcher Builders was a little light on numbers for the first time with a lot still enjoying the holiday period or in Adelaide following the Tour Down Under. There as 38 riders in total with a pretty even spread of talent across the field. Conditions were pretty good but a solid southerly breeze would greet the riders as they kicked off. Before the exchange hill, on the way out, the 2nd and 3rd limit bunches had combined as they came together quickly. The 5 minute group had actually put a little time into a strong 3rd scratch group by the exchange corner, much to the surprise of the officials. The remainder of the field was still working hard to bridge their time gaps. At Eppalock primary school on the way home the field was coming together and would be soon in 2 main groups. The 5 minute group had merged with the front of the field while the back markers were slowly combining to chase them down. The sprint for the finish saw the combined 5 minute group hold off a fast finishing bunch by around 30 seconds. Ray Colwell in a solid sprint took out first place with Leigh Anne Dynon & Peter Harper in a tie for second & third places, Chris Davidge took 4th place, Dave Stokes 5th & Mick Lavery in 6th . First unplaced lady was Jo Wall and fastest time was again Tony Fitzpatrick. We would like to also remind all spectators, in particular those who are riding around the circuit, to not interfere with the race or try and combine with the race riders at any stage. Their interference with any of the groups can influence the race results and will ultimately force the race officials to disqualify any group getting outside assistance. Next weeks race is sponsored by Tyrepower. See you out there! |

The last race of the summer series before we break up for Christmas was sponsored by Dale Lowe signs. 55 riders in total made up the field with bunches of between 6 and 8 riders. A stiff south westerly greeted the riders on the start line which also kept the locusts quiet for the race. The testing start had some of the groups drop some riders early in the race. The second scratch group worked well together and had the bunch ahead well before the turn around. The limit group, with strength of numbers, looked good and was holding a solid lead after the turn around. The head wind for the journey home took the sting out of the groups and with the 2nd, 3rd & 4th bunch combined they were closing the time gap quickly. Into the exchange hill, the entire field was in this stretch making a tight race. Over the exchange hill the strong tail wind made the pace hot and the gaps difficult to close. Into the home stretch and the limit riders had managed to hold off the fast finishing field and had a 100 meter advantage. First to cross the line in his first race win was Brian Steen, 2nd Ricky Mitchell, 3rd Greg Chapman, 4th Paul Dalton, 5th Terry Schintler, 6th Christian Wakeling, 7th Tony Murphy, 8th Murray Rankin. First unplaced lady was Jo Wall. Coming in just on the back of the main group with fastest time was Tony Fitzpatrick. The aggregate scores are pretty tight to date with the series still
being anyones at the half way mark. Scores to date are: Tony Fitzpatrick
& Brian Steen 25pt, Mark Williams 21pt, Gary Leech 19pt, Andrew
Purcell, Peter Hayes & Ken Hamilton 17pt, Rod McCredden 16pt,
David Colwell 15pt, Carl Louchard, Ray Colwell, James Thompson &
Mick Brady 14pt, Martin Banfield & Gary Jonston 13pt. The next race for the series is on Wednesday 12th January, we look
forward to seeing everyone out there –we hope you all have a
safe and happy Christmas – New Year! |

The forecast of torrential rain for Wednesday evening didn’t dampen the spirits of 26 lion-hearted Central Victorian Veteran’s Cycling Club members who fronted up for the Dale Lowe Signs Summer Series race this week, sponsored by Tweed Sutherland First National Real Estate. The race was shortened to 26 kilometres due to water over Paton’s Road, but the weather remained fine and mild for the duration of the race. The handicapper sent the bunches off with gaps of two, three, five, six and a half and nine and a half minutes. The race was run in two parts with scratch picking up second on the way back along Axe Creek Road and third scratch at the telephone exchange. Up ahead the limit bunch splintered and the front bunches came together on the climb up Emu Creek Road. The combined back markers swooped on the rest of the field just before the turn into the home straight and moved to the front of the race at the final corner into Emu Creek Road. From then on the result was a formality with Justin Mollison leading out from the traffic island and Tony Fitzpatrick displaying great form to take out first place and fastest time off scratch. He was followed home in 2nd place by David Bakes (scr) with Mick Anderson (2 min) chipping in for 3rd, Mark Williams (2 min) 4th, Chris Draper (2 min) 5th, and Tony Jones (scr) 6th. First unplaced lady was Jo Wall. Next Wednesday’s race is sponsored by Dale Lowe signs and is the last Summer Series race before the Christmas break. |

The fifth race of the Dale Lowe Signs Summer series drew a field of 61 riders again despite the threat of rain. This week’s race was sponsored by Valentini & Murphy Accountants and was back to the normal handicap event. The field was broken up into large bunches with time gaps ranging from 1 to 2 minutes across most groups. The lack of numbers in the scratch bunch forced the handicapper to tighten the back end of the field for the race. A few riders found the going a little tough and were shed early in the race and battled to hold onto the next group along the way. The 4 minute group rode solidly and had positioned themselves onto the back of the 5 minute group at the turn around. The chase groups had made little ground on these bunches at this point and no other groups had merged by the turnaround. A crash on the climb out of Axe Creek before the primary school saw the combined 4 & 5 minute groups break apart and weaken. The 2.5 minute group gain some extra numbers but were still struggling to close the gap ahead. Scratch worked well and had caught the 1 minute group at he sight of the crash and gave them some much needed drive to shorten the gap ahead. The limit riders were caught and spat by the 9 minute group before the exchange hill and the 9 minute group with the benefit of numbers were working well together and looking good at this stage. The remnants of the combined 4 & 5 minute group were chasing hard but fell short of catching the race leaders; it was the same story behind as well. The end of the race saw all of the gaps closed considerably and only
1.5 minutes separated the field. The final results were: |

The Fourth race of the Dale Lowe Signs Summer series drew a field of 61 riders for the first of the graded scratch races sponsored by Bolton’s Office National. The threat of rain didn’t seem to deter the riders rolling out in good numbers again. The field was graded into five groups, from A grade through to E grade. Each group had up to 16 riders with A, B & C grades the larger in size. In what would be a pleasing result for the handicapper, the groups managed to hold together through the majority of the race. It was only at the Exchange hill that some of the stronger riders applied pressure to the bunch and managed to shed a few before the finish. The final results were: B Grade: 1st – Mark Williams. 2nd – Dale Stemmer. 3rd Craig Banfield. C Grade: 1st – James Thompson. 2nd – Craig Haliday. 3rd – Darren Tricket. D Grade: 1st – David Colwell. 2nd - Carl Louchard. 3rd – Gary Leech. E Grade: 1st – Gary Johnston. 2nd – Ken Tanner. 3rd Brian Steen. The third race of the Dale Lowe Signs Summer series drew a field of 73 riders for the Pilcher Builders sponsored event. The perfect weather and conditions were most likely the reason for such a large field. Taking on board the results of the first 2 races the handicapper made some minor changes to the make up of the race bring scratch 30 seconds closer to field. The front of the field was brought in marginally as well in an effort to even up everyone’s chances. A slight head wind met the field on the journey through to the exchange; the pace was quick as usual down through to the turn around. The big bunches forced the speed of all bunches up and saw only small margins made up between the groups at this stage of the race; the performance on the journey home critical to success in the race. The 5 minute group had made little ground on the 6 minute group; however, the 6 minute group had reeled in the bunch ahead after the school, and with the benefit of numbers were managing to hold the 5 minute group off. The back end of the field were getting closer but still had some distance to make up. The combined 6 minute group started to churn through the slower bunches ahead and were leaving a trail of dropped riders across the exchange hill and towards home. With a 100 meter gap to close the 5 minute group looked unlikely to get there at this stage but still rode hard through to the finish. The back end of the field in the same boat could only hope to shorten the gap to a respectable margin at the finish. The combined 6 minute group had control of the race for the sprint finish. Ray Colwell was first over the line with a strong win followed by Andrew Purcell in 2nd, Peter Harper 3rd, Mick Brady 4th, Chris Chambers 5th, David Colwell 6th, Sabrina Smythe 7th, James Thompson 8th, First Unplaced Lady was Sam Smagas and fastest time was Tony Fitzpatrick with an average speed of just under 43Kph again. The end result was a great effort from the handicapper with only
1 minute separating the entire field at the end of the race. Next
weeks race is sponsored by Bolton’s Office National and are
graded scratch races. For those looking at aggregate points –
points are awarded to the top 3 places only from each scratch race,
but you do still get your 1 point for racing. This is a good opportunity
to grab some extra points by winning your grade! |

The second race of the Dale Lowe Signs Summer series saw 57 riders out to contest in what seemed to be pretty unfavorable conditions for racing. Whilst the breeze was strong and the threat of rain there; by the start of the race conditions improved. The second race of the series was sponsored by Valentini & Murphy Accountants. After getting a good look at the field the previous week the handicapper took the opportunity to tighten the gaps to get some closer racing. Limit were set off 15 minutes and bunches were only given 1 to 2 minute gaps with scratch given a 2.5 minute time to chase. The race started pretty steady with conditions easing and most of the groups working well together. The 4.5 minute group had almost self destructed by the half way mark loosing most of its riders along the way but still managing to get close to the 6 minute bunch ahead. The 2.5 minute group reeled in the 3.5 minute group pretty quickly looking good on paper and out on the road. The 15 minute limit group had a massive lead at Eppalock Primary School and looked certain to take control of the rest of the race. The 12 minute group had the benefit of numbers and worked away into the wind to eventually bring them in to form one group at the head of the race. At the back end of the field scratch were only marginally closing the gap to a very strong combined 2nd & 3rd bunch. The combined 2nd & 3rd group were working well driving towards the rest of the field which were all caught by Emu Creek road on the way home except for the combined 12 & 15 minutes group which still held about a 1 minute advantage. With no threat from the back of the field the contest was amongst the combined 12 & 15 minute group. New rider and club member Peter Hayes took out first place ahead of Gary Leech in 2nd, Jack Trickey 3rd, Sam Smagas 4th, Trevor Miles 5th, Bruce Tonkin 6th, Wendy Bennet 7th, Ken Hamilton 8th. First Unplaced lady was Evelyn Keeteelaar and Fastest Time was won by Tony Fitzpatrick off scratch with an average speed of 43KPH. Next weeks race is sponsored by Graeme Pilcher from Pilcher Building Contractors. |

The first race of the Dale Lowe Sign’s Summer Series certainly
drew some interest with 67 riders up for the challenge. The series
has drawn some fantastic support with every event a sponsored race;
the first race was sponsored by Dale Lowe Sign’s. For the first half of the race all groups appeared to work reasonably well together managing to make some ground on the bunches ahead. The 7 minute group had worked best at this stage reeling in the 9 minute bunch just after the turn around. The remainder of the field still had considerable gaps to close on the stretch for home if they were to make an impact. The combined 7 & 9 minute group worked steadily towards exchange slowly bringing in the 11 minute and limit bunches. With a solid pace up the exchange hill they accounted for all of the front makers at the top to take control of the race heading home. The pace heated up off the top of the exchange hill and the remainder of the chase groups had too big of a gap to close before the finish. An attack from Peter Harper going into the hill before the finish
was quickly covered by Rod McCredden who took advantage of the sit
to the top of the hill. Andrew Purcell launched an attack at the top
of the hill also to get a considerable break from the rest of the
field. Andrew held a 40 meter advantage into the home stretch with
Rod in hot pursuit away from the field by another 30 meters. The final
100 meters saw Andrew begin to fade as Rod took him with 10 meters
to go and to take out first place honors. Mick Brady surged in the
sprint to also take Andrew right on the line for 2nd place with Andrew
coming home for 3rd, Russell Gilby took 4th, Graeme Pilcher 5th, Sandy
Agnoletto 6th, Peter Harper 7th, First unplaced lady was Leigh-Anne
Dynon and John Macague took out fastest time with an average speed
of 42.5Kph. |

This was the final race of the summer series held on Sunday morning in quite mild but blustery conditions. A massive field of 74 riders rolled up for the race and the opportunity to grab double aggregate points to snatch the series; with no individual really dominating the series it was any ones chance to take it out. Big bunches across the field with time gaps of 1 to 2 minutes and limit markers of 16 minutes made up the field. A few of the big hitters were missing from the scratch bunch leaving them with 7 riders and a tighter time gap of 2 minutes to the bunch ahead. The stiff head wind for the journey out took the sting out of some groups as they struggled to get some speed out of their bunches. The back markers relished in the conditions putting on the pace into the wind and making up some valuable ground at the start. With the tail breeze behind the field on the way to the turn around the field had the pace on making it difficult for any one to make too much ground. The 5 ½ min group caught the 6 ½ minute group just before the turn around and were being hotly pursued by the 4 minute group behind. The front markers had lost considerable ground to the rest of the field failing to take advantage of the big tail wind. The gaps between scratch, 2nd & 3rd had closed marginally with all bunches travelling quickly. The combined 5 ½ minute group battled to maintain they’re slender gap with a lot of passengers and only a handful of riders willing to keep the pace into the head wind home. The 3rd scratch group worked well to catch 4th and push towards the combined 5 ½ minute group which only had 5 or 6 riders maintaining the pace. At the exchange hill the combined 3rd scratch group were just 100 meters off the back of the combined 5 ½ minute group who still struggled for drive at the front. The limit markers had fragmented and were all riding on their own spread across the journey home. Scratch had too much ground to make up and was not going to reel in the rest of the field. With 2 kms to go, the combined 3rd scratch group got onto the back of the remains of the 5 ½ minute group and took control of the race. A surge on the climb before the corner into the sprint had the stronger riders of the group well positioned for the sprint finish. With a strong ride and equally strong sprint for the finish, Andrew Creek took out 1st place just ahead of Mal Balnaves in 2nd, 3rd was David Cheal, 4th Theo Kapa, 5th Steve Spencer, 6th Dale Lowe, 7th Paul Dynon, 8th Leigh-Anne Dynon, 9th Peter Harper, 10th Brett Williams and fastest time was Trevor Watchman. It was a tight finish in the aggregate with Tony Fitzpatrick 1st on 32 points, equal 2nd was Dave Cheal, Steve Spencer & Paul Dynon on 31 points, and Mick Angove in 3rd with 30 points. In the ladies aggregate Leigh-Anne Dynon took out 1st with 30 points, 2nd Wendy Bennett 21 points & 3rd Di Jane 19 points. |

This was the second last race of the series and the last Wednesday night race, the final of the series being held on this Sunday 1st March at the Emu Creek circuit at 10.00am. 130 riders in total have entered and contested in the series with the largest field just tipping the 70 rider mark. Last nights race still managed to attract another large field of over 60 riders. The aggregate scores are tight with double points on offer and if you got a score of 10 points and over you’re in with a chance. Conditions last night were typical of the season with the traditional southerly wind picking up along the course and proving gusty at some times. The back end of the field was very strong again with large numbers of riders at that level up for a hit out. The last few weeks has seen the numbers at the front end of the race a little thin making the handicapping at that end a little more difficult to sort. The very strong and in form scratch bunch were again given a big 3 minute gap to chase with 7 in their group and chasing 12 riders of second scratch. The rest of the field was of 4 mins, 5 ½ mins, 6 ½ mins, 8 mins, 12 mins & 3 limit riders off 17 mins. The start of the race saw some of the groups work well together and take advantage of any opportunity to combine with other groups. The 5 ½ minute group started strongly merging with the 6 ½ minute group at the exchange corner and catching the 8 minute group half way down to the school. This combined group had managed to hold their gap ahead of the 4 minute group conceding no ground at the school. A much more organized and stronger second scratch group had the pace on and caught the 4 minute group at the school on the way out while scratch laboured behind not making any dent in the gap at this stage. The big gap obviously causing some headaches for the bunch. The race had settled after the turn around with two major groups forming, the 3 & 4 minute group were sitting about 1 minute off the combined 5 ½, 6 ½ & 8 minute group. Still ahead was now only the two limit markers with a sizable lead and the 12 minute group who had made no impact on the limit group and would soon be accounted for by this fast moving bunch behind. Approaching the exchange hill scratch was well out of the picture making no ground on the large group ahead. The combined 3 & 4 minute group had only a 100 meter gap to close to the combined 5 ½ minute group; the speed difference was marginal with both groups working well. The two limit riders were well on their way home and had a solid 3 minute gap. Some ego’s came out on the exchange hill only to serve as a nuisance to the unity of the 5 ½ minute group who still held a solid 50 meter gap to the bunch behind. With the wind behind them and the speed difference still marginal between the two groups the gap was not being closed and remained around 50 meters for the run home. Just out of the corner and into the home straight the combined 3 minute group surged to just latch onto the back of the bunch ahead. The two limit riders managed to stay away and take out the race with Ken Hamilton in first place with his second ride with the club; he was followed by John Kirkham in 2nd place. A couple of hundred meters back the stronger riders of the 3 minute group had managed to push themselves into position for the final sprint with Dave Fairburn 3rd, Terry Schintler 4th, Hudson Crothers 5th, Rob Gibson 6th, Tony Murphy 7th, Glen Farrow 8th, David Stokes 9th, Shane Thompson 10th and Fastest Time Tony Fitzpatrick. The scratch group only managed to put a 12 second dent into the 3 minute gap leaving the handicapper to ponder about the set up of the final race on Sunday. Aggregate scores to date are: Please remember to get out and enter on time on Sunday so the handicapper can get the race organized and starting on time. There will be some snacks after the race and the mobile coffee van will also be in attendance. See you out there!! |

Wednesday night summer series racing continues to grow in popularity with 66 riders competing for line honours. With a large field and a minority arriving late the handicapper’s role was going to be difficult right from the gun. Big bunches were right across the field with up to 12 riders in some groups. Much to the handicappers and organisers dismay, around 8 riders failed to start with their bunch and were forced to ride off on their own or go with the next bunch; including some who were so late to the start line they were back more than two groups. This would prove costly for some groups after being handed a significant advantage of strong numbers to their bunch in an effort to help them bridge their time gaps. With some disparity in ability within the groups as a result, there were a steady stream of riders being spat on the journey out. Combined with the tough windy conditions it was the end of the race for them. Some groups self destructed on the journey out shedding all but a handful of their riders only to be weakened to a point where they were an easy catch for the bunch behind. With the strength of numbers up at the front end of the field the limit markers and the group in chase failed to get some rhythm and looked in trouble by the turn around. The 5 minute group had caught the remains of the 6 ½ minute group well before the turn around and they were then reeled in by the 4 minute group to form one large group shortly after the turn around. Second scratch failed to make any impact on the group ahead only marginally closing the gap at the half way mark. After the recent success of the in form scratch bunch they were handed a 3 minute gap to close to what was intended to be a strong second scratch group of 12 riders. Scratch really didn’t get that well organised in the pursuit and struggled to rein in the large time gap. The combined 4 minute group took control of the race even though they looked untidy and were certainly not smooth on the road. The exchange hill again proved to be breaking point for some of the riders with gaps forming and riders failing to cling on over the crest. With a lead too large to close the 4 minute group had control of the race. Scratch eventually caught 2nd scratch on the crest of the exchange, but were still too far back for any chance of a win. The final sprint saw Dale Stemmer take out first, Paul Volk 2nd, Peter Harper 3rd, Paul Dynon 4th, Stuey Muller 5th, Mal Balnaves 6th, Andrew Hayhow 7th, Bruce Baldwin 8th, Darren Trickey 9th, and Gary Murdock 10th, Tony Fitzpatrick took out fastest time. |

Rain, thunder, lightening and very dirty conditions had the handicapper thinking his job was going to be easy for this race as surely no one would be brave enough to venture out for a race? A very timid few approached the Emu Creek Hall with conditions still looking bleak. As time passed the weather appeared to settle and riders started to enter the race; 28 riders in total. A very strong scratch bunch were given a 3 minute gap to 7 riders off 2nd, who were chasing bunches off 4 min, 5 min, 10 min and then two front markers on their own off 15 min and 18 min. With one try rider off the 10 minute group proving a little too strong for the bunch he proceeded to damage the group shedding part of the bunch before the exchange. The gaps tightened up on the journey through to the turn around with a couple of riders surrendering to the conditions on the way out. The 3 min & 4 min group came together around the turn around and still had a significant gap to close down ahead. The remainder of the 10 min group still held a significant gap and looked like they may be the winning bunch at that stage. Scratch had bridged at least half of their gap and was looking strong and well organized. The wind picked up and the weather started to turn dirty as the riders made their way home. The 3 min, 4 min & 5 min group came together just before the exchange to form one larger strong group. The 10 minute group self destructed with the try rider shedding his group one by one until he was on his own. With the conditions turning for the worst and a lack of unity within the combined group, scratch started to bring them back in. The main bunch had managed to hold away from scratch at the top of the exchange hill and only needed to maintain the effort to sneak home for the win. The front markers had been all but reeled in by the top of the exchange hill. Scratch put in a massive effort to tag onto the back of the main group about 3 km from the finish line and propped for a spell to prepare for the sprint. With a big kick for the line John MaCague broke away early to take out first place and fastest time. In a tight sprint for 2nd Justin Mollison took it out over Phil Sawyer 3rd, to Mick Angove 4th, Tony Fitzpatrick 5th, Tony Jones 6th and Paul Dalton in 7th. Tony Fitzpatrick now holds a solid lead in the men’s aggregate
as scratch start to dominate the series, and Leigh-Anne Dynon is well
ahead in the Ladies Aggregate. The ladies Aggregate led by Leigh-Anne Dynon 27, Wendy Bennett 19, Di Jane 16 and Sheridan Hall 15 points. With three more races in the series and double points in the final race it is still any ones chance to take out the aggregate prize. |

Good numbers again with 57 riders out for a race around the Emu Creek circuit. With not much wind about the pace form the front markers was likely to be on the rise. Last week saw the limit bunch get caught at the exchange and the handicappers gave them an additional 1 ½ minutes to help them home this week starting them off 16 ½ minutes. The front end of the field was a bit thin on it with the next 3 bunches of roughly 4 riders to a bunch riding off 13 mins, 11 mins and 9 mins. The rest of the field was abundant with riders of equal ability, making the grouping and time gaps a difficult task. With bunches of up to 10 riders they were off 6 mins, 5 mins, 4 mins & 2 ½ mins. A very strong scratch bunch was in chase with 6 riders in total. The lack of wind saw the start of the race move through the exchange and to the Primary school with all groups pulling in ground on the bunches ahead as expected. 2nd scratch was at a disadvantage with 2 riders missing the start line. Those 2 riders were mowed down by scratch and spat by the first 10 Km. At the turnaround the gaps had come in and the race looked like forming into 3 larger groups. 9, 11 & 13 minute groups would soon be together. The 5 & 6 minute group were about to merge but still had some ground to make up ahead. Scratch caught 2nd just before the school on the way home and had 3rd accounted for about 1 km back from the exchange corner. The combined 5 & 6 minute group were looking strong and only had 100 meters to bridge at the top of the exchange hill. The limit group had been reeled in at the top of the exchange hill at the same time. The back markers had a big gap to close only just starting the climb as the others were well over it. With 2 km to go the 5 minute group had caught the remainder of the field and held enough gap to prevent a fast finishing scratch bunch from snatching another win. A large bunch sprint saw Paul Dynon take out 1st place followed by
Dale Stemmer in 2nd, Tony Murphy 3rd, Leigh-Anne Dynon 4th, Roger
King 5th, Steve Auld 6th, Peter Harper 7th, Jenny Farrow 8th and Bruce
Tonkin 9th. Mick Angove with another strong ride took out fastest

Fine conditions greeted the 51 riders at the Emu Creek circuit, the traditional southerly breeze still strong enough to impact on the race. With a lot of the riders similarly matched the task of grouping the bunches and time gaps was made more difficult. A few of the scratch strong men still having a lay off left the handicappers wondering if the remaining scratch riders had the speed to reel in last weeks winners off 2nd scratch. With only 4 riders off scratch they opted to tighten the gap to 1 ½ minutes and chasing nine riders it should have been a difficult task? In front of the 1 ½ min group were bunches off 2 ½ mins, 3 ½ mins, 4 ½ mins all with 8 riders each. The rest of the field were made up of bunches of 5 riders off 7, 9, 12 and 15 minutes. The strong head wind took the string out of the front markers who surrendered a lot of ground to the rest of the field on the way out. Scratch got down to business and worked hard making solid time on the field ahead. Aided with the benefit of numbers the 2nd, 3rd and 4th scratch bunches didn’t get organized well enough to utilize that advantage and by the turnaround scratch had accounted for 2nd and were only metres off 3rd, with the 4th & 5th bunches only another 30 seconds away. A strong head wind and solid grind up to the Primary School had the forward groups wishing they had used the tail wind better on the journey out as the pace went out of their groups. At Eppalock Primary School scratch had caught the 3 ½ min group and were 100 metres off the now combined 4 ½ min & 7 min group. As scratch could see the rest of the field ahead the pace steadied as they drove into the head wind along Axe Creek Road. At the exchange scratch had only some riders from the 12 & 15 minutes groups left in front who were all caught by the top of the hill. With a surge of speed on the way up the hill only a core group of stronger riders remained for the final stretch home and the chance for a win. With a solid kick up the final hill and into the corner for the sprint Justin Mollison launched himself away from the field in a strong ride to take out first place and fastest time. Mick Angove was in 2nd, Tony Jones 3rd, Terry Schintler 4th, Tony Fitzpatrick 5th, Stuart Muller 6th, Geoff Bennett 7th, Arnie Lindsay 8th, Vin Obrien 9th, and Paul Dalton 10th place. The recent success of the scratch group has seen the riders
move up in the aggregate scores making up a pretty diverse group at
the top of the table. In the ladies aggregate; L Dynon leads on 21 points followed by W Bennett 17 points, Di Jane 16 points and Sheridan Hall 15 points. |

With the Tour Down Under in full swing and a large number of riders over in SA watching the race, the numbers were slightly down on previous weeks. 42 riders still managed to get out for a race. The numbers were pretty thin at the front of the field and scratch was missing its two strong men, John MaCague & Nick Shipp. After posting a win last week scratch were pulled back 30 seconds giving 2nd scratch an opportunity to perform. The field was still made up of 9 bunches, starting at 16 minutes, then followed by 13 mins, 10 mins, 6 mins, 5 mins, 4 mins, 3 mins, 2 ½ mins and then scratch. The traditional head wind was ever present at the start slowing the pace to the exchange. 2nd scratch moved quickly to take advantage of the short time gap to the bunch ahead and get the assistance of extra numbers, grabbing 3rd before the exchange. The 5 minute group made good time on the 6 minute group and latched onto them before the Primary School while the 4 minute group self destructed and were caught well before the turn around. At the turn around the front bunches had lost considerable time to the rest of the field and had only closed the gaps between themselves marginally, any benefit of merging was going to eventuate before being caught. The combined 5 & 6 minute group had worked well up until the turnaround until a glimpse of the combined 2nd scratch group, which gave some of the riders a heart failure as they surrendered and stopped working to keep them at bay. With only 4 riders maintaining the pace the combined 5 minute group was caught 1 km back from the exchange corner. Scratch still had a solid 1 ½ minutes to close and were looking out of it at this stage. The front markers were all under 1 minute ahead and would be accounted for on the exchange hill. With no where to hide on the journey up the exchange hill and a solid
cross wind to contend with, only those in good position and some strength
managed to make it through with the main bunch. 2nd scratch were well
and truly in control of the race at the top of the exchange with scratch
too far back to make any challenge and the rest of the field accounted
for. The pace remained solid through to the finish line; Tony Fitzpatrick
took out first place with a solid ride followed by Arnie Lindsay 2nd,
Hudson Crothers 3rd, Terry Schintler 4th, Christian Wakeling 5th,
Noel Knight 6th, Dave Bakes 7th and Paul Dynon 8th. In a tight sprint
for fastest time Trevor Watchman just piped Mick Angove on the line.

This was the first race back after Christmas on the Veteran Cycling calendar; conditions were excellent for racing with temperatures not too warm. A stiff southerly breeze, as usual, was still there to greet the riders off the start line. 53 riders turned up to contest the race and the collection of riders would predominantly fill the back end of the field. The two limit riders started off 15 minutes and were pursued by a large bunch of nine riders off 10 minutes. With the rest of the field made up of bunches of roughly 8 riders they were off 7 min, 5 ½ min, 4 min, 3 min, 2 min, back to a solid bunch of 5 off scratch. Conditions were tough off the start with the head wind quite strong until the exchange, where all of the bunches took advantage of the tail breeze through to the turn around to try and hold their gaps and not concede any ground. Scratch had made some good ground on the 2nd scratch group who would be caught just after the turn around. The rest of the field had managed to only marginally close the gaps to each other with no bunch looking dominant at this point. At Eppalock Primary School the gaps had closed in significantly across the field with riders being shed from their bunches and the head wind home testing the strength of the groups. Scratch were motoring along and looking well organized with the support of 2nd scratch and 3rd about to be accounted for. The 5 1/2 & 7 minute group had combined and were closing in on the 10 minute group. The combined scratch bunch caught the 4 minute group 1 km back from the exchange and were still looking strong but still had 2 groups and limit to reel in. Dave Kieth riding off limit rode away from his co marker at the Primary School and was still holding a solid lead at the top of the exchange hill with scratch still back at the exchange corner. The 5 1/2 , 7 & 10 minute groups had combined at the exchange corner and had a good 40 second lead on scratch. The scratch bunch turned it on up the exchange hill with only a couple of riders managing to hang on. This burst of speed saw them put 30 seconds into the combined group ahead who were eventually caught 3 km from home. With only Dave Kieth off limit left to reel in, he still had a ½ km lead and 3 km to go. With the pace on scratch caught Dave around the turn into the home straight. With a strong tail breeze to lift the speed into the sprint Nick
Shipp put in a strong ride for first place and fastest time to hold
off Trevor Watchman who threw everything at him in a bid to win. It
was Trevor in 2nd followed by Tony Fitzpatrick 3rd, Carl Harris 4th,
Andrew Pascoe 5th, Mick Angove 6th, Justin Mollison 7th, Mal Balnaves
8th, and Arnie Lindsay 9th. |

Very warm conditions kept a lot of the riders away with only 40 riders still braving the warmer weather. A solid group of back markers rolled up and the front end of the field was a little thin forcing the handicappers to use time gaps to even up the odds. Four riders off limit were given a solid start off 15 minutes followed by 2 small groups off 9 & 6 minutes, behind them the stronger groups off 4, 2 ½ , 2 minutes and then 5 riders off scratch. The start saw several riders across a few of the groups miss their bunch and force them to chase or drop back a bunch impacting the performance of some groups. The journey through to the exchange had the added assistance of a tail wind pushing the speeds up quite high. The expectation was for the 2minute group to reel in the 2.5 minute group and work together to hold back the strong scratch bunch, but it wasn’t to be? Scratch had taken 1 minute out of 2nd scratch by mid way down axe creek road and 2nd had not made up any time on the 2.5 minute group who were slowly making ground on the bunch ahead. The turn around had limit holding a massive lead but they’d shed one rider and soon after had lost another. The 9 minute group had made next to no ground on limit with Trevor Pell and Di Jane combining well to keep them at bay. Scratch had grabbed the remains of the 2nd scratch bunch and had their sights on the rest of the field. From Eppalock Primary School through to the exchange scratch accounted for each bunch ahead one by one. Some heavy traffic and surrendering riders caught a couple of the stronger back markers off guard as they were put out the back; a move that may have made a difference to the end result? At the exchange corner all had been consumed by scratch except for the two limit riders still away by a solid couple of minutes. With scratch in chase the heat and the pace took its toll on the field seeing the majority drop off the pursuit and slowly meander home. Di Jane managed to outwit Trevor Pell and dominated the sprint for first place, Trevor took out second place. About 1 minute back was scratch with Tony Jones just beating Mick Angove for third place and fastest time, they were followed by Nick Shipp in 5th place, Arnie Lindsay 6th, John MaCague 7th, Hudson Crothers 8th, Glenn Farrow 9th and Ric MaCintosh in 10th. This was the final race for the year in the Wednesday night series, the racing will resume again on Wednesday the 13th of January. |

Another Wednesday night with mild conditions saw 50 riders turn up to test themselves. We had a north westerly breeze making the race a little more interesting providing riders with some assistance on the journey home. After tightening up the field last week the handicappers opted to follow the same train of thought but give some added strength of numbers to the back end of the field in a bid to see them get closer to the highly successful middle groups. Limit were given 4 riders and 16 minutes to get them rolling, they were followed by 4 riders off 11 minutes, then 5 riders off 7 minutes and behind them were 6 riders off 6 minutes, followed by 4 minute, 3 minute & 2 minute groups all with 8 riders each and then scratch with 6 gun riders. With the gaps very tight some of the groups came together relatively quickly and well before the turnaround. The 6 & 7 minute group had combined just after the exchange on the journey out, and the 2 & 3 minute group had done the same. The additional numbers in the 2 & 3 min group proved to be less helpful at times and slowing the speed of the bunch. Scratch had pulled in just over 1 minute to the combined 2nd & 3rd scratch group at the halfway mark and only 1 minute separated the 4 minute group from the chase group and the group they were in pursuit of. Limit held a commanding lead and looked the likely winners at this stage and the 11 minute group were close to being reeled in also. Coming along axe creek road on the way back all of the groups had the assistance of a tail breeze making it more difficult for anyone to make up any ground. Limit were still well ahead, the 6 minute group had combined with the rest of the groups ahead and held only a 40 second gap back to the 4 minute group. Scratch were very close to the combined 2 & 3 minute group and still had at least 1 minute to close ahead of them. The 4 minute group tagged onto the back of the combined forward bunches with about 2 km to go and limit had fragmented with only 2 riders trying to defend their lead less than 100 yards ahead. Scratch had caught and shed the 2 & 3 minute group had were powering hard to close the gap to the leaders. Into the home stretch limit finally surrendered with only 200 yards
to go and left the sprint for a win up to the combined 4 minute and
forward bunches. Scratch put in a massive effort to bring them in
but fell short by about 30 seconds. Murray Rankin on his shiny new
bike took out first place in a very strong sprint for the line clearing
the field by 20 yards, 2nd was Leigh-Anne Dynon, 3rd Christian Wakeling,
4th Darren McKellar, 5th Sabrina Smythe, 6th Gary Murdoch, 7th Chris
Weatherit, 8th Steve Auld, 9th David Cheal and fastest time was John

Good conditions have again attracted a large field of 60 riders to the race. After last weeks results and in a bid to give the back markers a better chance, the handicapper went about bringing the field back in pulling the previous weeks winning bunch back by 2 minutes. The rest of the field were dragged back at least a minute to ensure a closer race. Limit remained off 18 minutes but were strengthened up by another rider; in chase were bunches off 12 min, 9 min, 7.5 min, 6.5 min, 5 min, 4 min, 3 min, 2 min & scratch. The tighter gaps presented more opportunity for the bunches to come together and dominate the race. Conditions were such that there was no real advantage for any of the groups on the night; rather than the traditional hard slog home. On the journey out the 4 & 5 min groups had combined as had the 2 min & scratch bunch, whilst the gaps had tightened considerably across the field. At the halfway mark scratch were exactly 9 minutes behind limit and on track to reel them in. The journey home saw scratch account for the 3 minute group and the combined 4 & 5 minute group grab the 6.5 minute group as well. At the exchange hill there was less than 1 minute separating the now 2 large groups with a fragmented field still working ahead and limit yet to be caught. The stronger riders of the combined scratch group put in a big effort to try and close the gap but with the strength of number in the bunch ahead it was only just out of reach. Coming into the home stretch was the entire field with limit holding a 15 second advantage to one large bunch of riders from the 4 minute group forward and then the scratch group only 30 seconds behind them. Wendy Bennett put in a solid ride to roll Dave Kieth and take out first place, Dave of course in second. Steve Spencer took out the sprint for the next bunch and grabbing third place, and in doing so streaking away in the aggregate contest. 4th was Paul Dynon followed by Mick Anderson in 5th, Christian Wakeling in 6th, Sheridan Hall in 7th, Gary Murdoch 8th, Darren Trickey 9th and Ricky (every week) Lovel in 10th. Fastest Time went to Justin Mollison with an ave speed of 41.8 Kph. |

Another large field of 55 riders hit the circuit this week, and after last weeks huge numbers there was an expectation of even more given the mild conditions on the evening. Smaller bunches and tighter gaps was the formulae for the race this week in a bid to even up the opportunities. Once again, a very classy scratch bunch turned out to take on the field; punished heavily last week because of the sheer numbers and strength of the bunch the handicapper gave them some relief choosing to bring the gap to second scratch back to 3 minutes. Tow limit riders were again off 18 minutes with most bunches being made up of six riders at 13 min, 11 min, 9 min, 8 min, 6.5 min, 5 min, 4 min and 3 min. Although conditions were mild there was still that slight head wind to kick off with through to the exchange where the tail breeze offered only some slight assistance. The 3 & 4 minute groups combined early with the 3 min group catching them at the school on the way out. At the turn around limit were still away but the 8, 9 & 11 min groups had merged and had gain some pace with numbers. The 5 min group had not made ground on the bunch ahead and was caught by the combined 3 & 4 min group soon after the turn around. The return home saw some of the riders start to struggle and drop way from their bunches as the stronger riders stepped it up a notch. Scratch still had a good minute to close at the school and the task became harder as the combined 3,4 & 5 min bunches started to work steadily ahead. Once the groups had combined across the field the pace had lifted and the gaps would be too big for any of the chase bunches to close. The final sprint for the finish saw new rider Dave Chival take out 1st followed by Gary Leech in 2nd, Bruce Tonkin 3rd,Liegh Anne Dynon 4th, Peter Harper 5th, Sandy Angelletto 6th, Sam Smaggars 7th, Darren Trickey 8th. Fastest Time was Nick Shipp off scratch and first unplaced lady was Aileen Obrien. |

With conditions not quite as hot as the previous week the race attracted much larger numbers, a huge field of 66 riders turned out to contest. The large number of entries and the relatively short time frame to put the race together had the handicappers scratching their heads and looking for the right answers? As it turned out they had opted for fewer bunches with very large numbers, some bunches of 10 in the mid field. Limit again were given another minute starting off 19 minutes, followed by a 14 min, 12 min, 7.5 min, 6.5 min, 5 min, 4 min bunches and then a gun scratch bunch of 8 riders. Perhaps the strongest veteran scratch bunch seen at local races for some time, chasing a four minute gap in a short race, they’d certainly need to be well organized and have the pace on. With the breeze coming from the north the traditional head wind start was not to be and although the heat didn’t appear like it was going to be a factor it was definitely hot out on the road. The big time gaps ensured that none of the bunches were going to come together too easily on the journey out to the turn around. The 12 minute group had combined with the 14 minute group at that point and was closing in on the 2 limit riders who would be caught by Eppalock Primary School coming home. The 4 minute & 5 minute group had come together before the turn around also but were not making too much ground on the groups ahead. Scratch struggled to reel in the big groups ahead where the benefit of numbers forced the average speed well above the 40 km mark. The 6.5 & 7.5 min bunches combined just before the exchange corner
and still had a good 2 minute gap to close ahead. The combined 4 &
5 minute groups were trailing by at least 1 minute and scratch had
only made up a couple of minutes on them also. With a fast finish
and big gaps remaining, the 12 & 14 minute groups were set for
victory. In a big bunch finish 1st was Greg Barklay, 2nd Tony Gellatly,
3rd Christian Wakeling, 4th Bruce Tonkin, 5th Sam Smaggars, 6th David
Collwell, 7th Gary Leech, 8th Aileen Obrien, 9th Mellissa Chiappazzo,

The sweltering 38 degree heat for the day failed to keep 45 very keen riders away from the race. With the temperature still in the mid 30’s at the start of the race it was always going to challenge some of the riders. Last weeks race saw limit being caught well before the race end, so a let out was on the cards this week. Two limit riders were off 18 minutes followed by bunches of six riders off 13 mins, 11 mins, 8 mins, 6 mins, 5 mins, 3 mins, and then back to scratch. The start saw riders heading off into a moderate head wind through to the exchange before getting some assistance from a tail wind. The 8 minute group looked good on paper and with an extra rider in their bunch and some experienced campaigners to organize the group they were going to be hard to catch. The heat & testing conditions saw some of the riders surrender before the halfway mark and weaken the drive of their bunches. The five riders off scratch put in a powerful performance to be snapping at the heels of a pretty classy 2nd scratch bunch of seven riders just after Eppalock Primary School on the way out; bridging a three minute gap in 12 kms. The journey home had the 8 minute bunch working well together holding off the chase group and reeling in the 11 min, 13 min & 18 min groups by the exchange corner. Scratch had combined with 2nd and accounted for the 5 min & 6 min groups at the top of the exchange hill. With scratch still approx 1 min off the lead group the gap would prove too much to close in the distance they had left. The leading 8 minute group had shed some of the slower riders off the back and combined well lining up for a sprint finish. Steve Spencer returning back to racing after a brief spell managed to grab 1st place followed by Sheridan Hall in 2nd, Glenn Farrow 3rd, Noel (Knobby) Knight 4th, Steve Auld 5th, Bruce Tonkin 6th, Christian Wakeling 7th, Daniel Barry 8th. 1st Unplaced Lady was Aileen Obrien and fastest time was taken by Tony Jones in a tight sprint with Justin Mollison. |

The first race of the series certainly pulled in some riders keen to test their form against the circuit. 58 riders in total entered the race and I would say just as many out having a look at the event. We had a large number of new riders, some returning back after a lay off and others out for their first run. Conditions on the evening were mild but as expected with a stiff head wind to start off the race. The large number of riders had the handicapping group scratching their heads and deliberating for some time in an attempt to make the first race a close contest. 10 bunches made up the field with limit given a big start at 16 minutes followed by bunches at 13mins, 11 mins, 9 mins, 7mins, 6mins, 5mins, 3 mins, 2mins & Scratch. With the race underway the respective bunches journeyed through to the telephone exchange and up to Eppalock Primary School gradually making ground on each other. The 9 minute group were working well together holding a good average speed to keep the 7 minute group at a safe distance. The 5 minute group had progressed close to the 6 minute group by the turn around and the strong scratch bunch had the hammer down and had pulled in 2nd scratch at the half way point and shortly after had accounted for the 3rd scratch group. The 9 min, 11min, 13 min and limit bunch all came together on the exchange corner seeing some of the weaker riders falling off the back. The back markers in chase had almost all combined but were still a good couple of minutes back. Into the final stretch the pace off the stronger riders in the 9 minute group forced more to surrender from the field leaving about a bunch of 10 for the final sprint. About 1km to go and one rider jumped away from the field, with no one prepared to give chase, he managed to pull of the win with 50 meters to spare. The remainder of the group contested for the minor placings with scratch in hot pursuit only 40 seconds back. A pretty impressive result for the handicapper in the first race of the season. The final race of the series was held on Sunday 1st March in relatively mild conditions compared to what the riders have face across the series. There were 50 riders in total and plenty of spectators out to enjoy the final race event. With double points up for grabs and potential aggregate winners positioned in each bunch there was some extra incentive to strive for the win. Limit were off 16 minutes followed by a series of groups 1 to 1 ½ minute apart with good sized bunches across the field. A bit of a stiff head wind challenged riders through to the exchange corner with most groups managing to reduce their gaps along the way. The tail wind through to the turn around provided some extra speed and little opportunity for the back markers to have a big impact on their respective gaps. After the turn around, and although the gaps had narrowed, there was no sign of any bunch looking to take control of the race. The strong and in form riders off scratch had a big gap of 1.5 minutes to close in and with the drive from John MaCague, Tony Jones & Nick Shipp combined they had 2nd scratch soon after the turn around. With some extra legs they soon reeled in the 3rd & 4th scratch groups before the exchange. The short stretch in the cross wind before caused a few to drop off unable to maintain the pace with a lack of cover. Into the exchange hill there was 3 main groups of rider stretched over the climb with a combined limit group and one smaller chase group still ahead. By the time scratch had got to the top of the hill they had closed the gap between the 3 groups and shifted their focus to the remainder of the front markers. Just before the corner into the stretch for home, scratch had accounted for the next group with only a couple still only just away. Managing to just hold off the fast finishing scratch group and taking out the race was Steve Bright in his first win with the club closely followed by Trevor Pell in 2nd and Dave Keith 3rd. John MaCague took out 4th, Leigh Bailey 5th, Tony Jones 6th and Sheridan Hall 7th. First Unplaced Lady was Fran Medina and John MaCague in another strong ride took out fastest time. With the help of the double aggregate points, Dave Keith took out
the overall men’s aggregate with a total of 49 points, followed
by Steve Bright with 48 points and John MaCague with 41 points. Eve
Keetelaar took out the overall ladies aggregate with 24 points, followed
by Melissa Chiapazzo with 22 points and Leigh-anne Dynon with 20 points. We look forward to seeing everyone back next summer for another great series of racing! |

51 riders in another solid turnout for the series in, yet again, very trying conditions. Whilst the heat wasn’t an issue the gusty southerly winds certainly provided some problems. Large bunches made up the field with gaps across at 1 to 2 minutes through to the lone limit rider off 18 minutes. The stiff head wind greeted all of the groups as they headed through to the exchange. The conditions tested those on the edge, with some riders not making it past the exchange corner. With the breeze on their backs through to the turn around the pace was pretty hot. Again, the riders who struggled to stay with their group to the exchange found the surge of pace to the turn around a bit too challenging, most groups losing a rider or two. At the turn around the limit rider still held a solid lead with the chase group 4 minutes behind not having too much impact on his margin. Surprisingly, it was the 7 minute group with the least number of riders that combined well together and had chipped away at gap ahead to bring in and combine with the 9 minute group. With the benefit of numbers working into the wind they kept the chase groups at a safe distance. Whilst the gaps had closed considerably across the rest of the field none had yet combined. The head wind on the journey home provided some serious obstacles for those in pursuit. Scratch had just combined with a large 2 minute group but didn’t look like threatening the depleted 4 minute group who were closing in on the 6 minute group. At the exchange hill the 4 minute group closed the gap to the 6 minute group and had them just over the top. The combined scratch and 2 minute group were too far back to have an impact at this stage. The combined 7 & 9 minute group held a pretty solid margin as well. With the strong tail wind on their backs none of the groups lost too much ground into the home stretch and any effort to close gaps was ineffective. With a solid gap still in hand Ricky Mitchell off 18 minutes took out 1st place. The battle for placings was set between the combined 7 & 9 minute group who had managed to ride through the groups in front and take control of the finish. Gordon Donaldson took out 2nd place, Gary Leech 3rd, Terry Medcalf 4th, Carl Louchard 5th, Paul Stucco 6th, Ricky Lovell 7th, Steve Bright 8th, and Fastest Time was John MaCague with Cindy Magro first unplaced lady. Sunday 1st March is the final race of the summer series with racing commencing at 9.30am. Please register by 9.00am. There will be a BBQ after the race followed by the series aggregate presentations. Remember it is double aggregate points for the final race of the series, so even if you haven’t won or placed in the series you may still have a chance with the aggregate if you win on the day! |

Another good roll out of riders with 50 or more up for a race, and without a breath of wind in the air the conditions were perfect for a quick race. Bunches of 6 to 7 riders were spread across the field from 1 ½ minutes through to 14 minutes, with 1 limit rider off 18 minutes. Scratch, once again were limited to just 2 riders, Tony Jones & John MaCague. After riding through the field to take out last weeks race they were given no favors this week with a 1 ½ minute gap to chase and quality bunch ahead. The pace was solid across all groups’ right through to the turn around with only the 7 & 8 minute groups combining and starting to close the gap to the front markers. At the turn around 2nd scratch latched onto to 3rd to form a larger chase group with scratch struggling to make any dent in the 1 ½ minute gap. With the 5 minute group in sight the combined back markers bunch maintained a steady pace in an effort to catch. The combined 7 & 8 minute group at this stage held a pretty solid advantage and were riding well slowly accounting for the front markers. Into the final leg, the combined 7 & 8 minute group had the race sewn up with the 5 minute group unable to bring them in and the 2nd/3rd scratch bunch the same. Scratch was still in chase with the prospect of winning fastest time looking in doubt. In the final sprint it was Bruce Baldwin in 1st, 2nd Cindy Magro, 3rd Trevor Miles, 4th Hudson Crothers, 5th Tony Gellatly, 6th Greg Payne, 7th Nick Walsh, & in 8th was Gary Leech. First unplaced Lady was Sam Smaggars. Tony Jones took out fastest time by only 3 seconds. |

There were a total of 50 riders for last night’s race in very
windy conditions. It was a sensational ride by the 2 scratch riders
who started 1 ½ minutes back of the next bunch of 6 riders.
They did well to catch a combined group of 12 riders from the 2nd
and 3rd scratch bunches at the halfway mark. They worked with the
group through to the exchange until they applied the pressure and
commenced to ride through the rest of the field. A lot of riders struggled
to cope in the windy conditions and battled their way home off the
back (me included). |

Tony Gellary | After a couple of weeks of blistering heat and another hot day riders were still keen to give the series course a go; 40 riders in total and very warm conditions. Although there are still plenty of new riders joining up and have race our handicapper has had the opportunity to measure most now and evening up the field. Through to the exchange on the first leg a couple of riders were dropped early finding the conditions too tough. The 8 min group at this point making considerable ground on the bunches in front. At the exchange corner the three scratch riders had reeled in the 1 minute gap and had combined with a handy 2nd scratch group. After the turn around the front makers still held a strong lead, and was looking well positioned, the 8 minute group eroding away at their margin. The other chasing bunches had moved closer together and some had combined. In the stretch before the exchange the combined scratch group caught the 2 ½ minute bunch and were hot on the heels of the other chasing groups. The limit riders still had about a 2 minute lead and looked like a chance if they could hold off the 8 minute bunch. The exchange hill proved too challenging in the conditions and the 8 minute group quickly reeled them in. Scratch had accounted for the rest of the field on the exchange hill and set about heating up the pace through the climb shedding a good number of riders. The move took the sting out of the field with only a few of the stronger riders committed to chasing down the leading riders with a good 1 minute gap ahead. New member Tony Gellary stretched the others in his group with a strong finish to take out first place followed by Peter Harper 2nd, Dave Keith 3rd, Steve Bright 4th, Trevor Pell 5th. Tony Jones took out 6th and fastest time finishing strongly followed by Nick Shipp and John MaCague also off scratch. First Unplaced Lady was Melissa Chiappazzo. |

Wednesday Night Summer Series |

Glenn Farrow |
With last Wednesday nights race cancelled because of the heat this week would be the first race of the series since Christmas. A very warm night with a moderate breeze was going to add more pain to the already tough course for the race. A total of 41 riders rolled up to have a crack, and to add to the already difficult task of handicapping the field, for 25% of the field it was their first race of the series and for more than half of those it was their first race with the club. Given the heat of the evening and the large number of new riders the handicappers opted to bolster up the bunches with some numbers hoping they would work well together in the testing conditions. This move would prove to be wrong as the race unfolded. The lone limit rider started the journey off 17minutes followed shortly by a small bunch off 14minutes, then the girls all off 12 minutes. The remainder of the field was of 10 min, 7 min, 5 min, 2 min and scratch with groups of up to 8 in each bunch. The heat and the cross wind took its toll in the first leg through to the exchange corner and saw some riders falling off their groups early. The rolling hills just before Eppalock Primary School proved to be too much for quite a few of the riders when the stronger of their groups applied the pressure shedding riders again. By the stretch into the turn around most groups had lost at least 2 of their riders, both the heat and pace proving too much. Most of the carnage happened in the first half of the race and after the turnaround things settled and the remaining riders and their groups combined well to make a race of it. New rider Glen Farrow and Brian Steen were working well together driving along strongly picking up the front markers with only the stronger managing to hang on. In pursuit was the combined 5 & 7 minute group, followed by a strong 2 minute group. At the back of the field driving hard was the remaining 2 scratch riders Tony Jones & John MaCague, too strong for their co-markers dropping them well before the turnaround. The exchange hill saw new rider Glen Farrow ride away from his co
markers in a bid to take the race. About 1 minute separated the combined
5 & 7 minute group from the 2 minute group who had just been reeled
in by scratch. A quick journey home and things didn’t alter
too much with Glenn Farrow taking out the win in his first ride by
about 40 seconds followed by Brian Steen 2nd and David Keith in 3rd.
a tight bunch sprint for the minor placing saw Phil Bone take 4th,
Grant Jones 5th, Greg Payne 6th, and Trevor Miles 7th. First Unplaced

Another great turnout for the Wednesday Summer Series with 47 riders
rolling up for the challenge. Conditions were quite mild but a stiff
head wind was going to greet the riders for the first leg of the course.
The breeze appeared to increase in intensity as the evening progressed.
The lone limit rider was off 18 minutes this week with a significant
gap behind. Most bunches were made up of 5 or 6 riders with time gaps
of 1 to 2 minutes across the field. With a couple of the “Big
Guns” missing this week from scratch, the scratch group was
made of a combination of the traditionally strong 2nd scratch riders
accompanied by Nick Shipp and Phil Sawyer. |

Dale Stemmer | 51 riders in total turned up for another Wednesday evening race in quite pleasant conditions, although we were back to the traditional head wind for the first leg of the race. With the mid filed stacked with riders of similar ability it was a pretty hard task to handicap the race; 11 bunches in total with most only separated by 1 minute, the opportunities were there for the taking. The lone limit rider was off 17 minutes and in chase was the 14 minute bunch. The first leg of the race tested the strength of each bunch with the steady uphill grind into a stiff head wind. Some found this too much and struggled only to be picked up by the next chasing bunch. After the exchange the stronger riders of each group put on the pace with the tail breeze to assist. The 4 minute bunch driven by Cait Fraser quickly made ground on the next group and drew away from the 2nd scratch bunch. At the turnaround the 4 and 5 minute group had combined, the hard chase proving too much for a few who fell off the back after a surge of pace out of the turn. The 6 and 7 minute group had also come together and riding strongly toward the remainder of the field. With a 2.5 minute gap to close scratch had yet to reel in the 2nd scratch group of riders. The trip home proved to be pretty testing into the wind until the exchange and saw plenty of riders struggle to hang on. At Eppalock Primary School scratch had reached the 2nd scratch group. The combined groups ahead were working well together and with the benefit of numbers they managed to prevent the powerful scratch group from closing too much of the gap, leaving them only the opportunity for a fastest time contest. At the exchange hill the combined 4 & 5 minute group caught the next combined bunch of riders and powered strongly towards home; again with Cait Fraser putting pressure on the bunch with some strong riding. Still ahead was the rest of the field, only holding a very narrow lead. At the base of the climb before the turn for home the field had come together, Stuart Muller attacked the climb to stretch out the chasing riders before the sprint for the line. Only those with the strength or fortunate position were able to contest the sprint to the line. In the tussle for the finish Dale Stemmer took out 1st followed by Darren Ellis 2nd, Russell Gilbey 3rd, Stuart Muller 4th, Cait Fraser 5th, Mal Balnaves 6th, Murray Rankin 7th and Roger King 8th. Fastest time was Nick Shipp and Leigh Anne Dynon the first unplaced lady. |

Last nights race saw only the brave show up with the weather looking a bit on the dirty side and the prospect of some much needed rain. 19 riders in total lined up to race and although surrounded by the threat of showers, it was quite pleasant with virtually no wind and little rain to dampen the spirits. There was a lot to be gain by some riders by simply turning up and riding to get their valuable aggregate series points. Evelyn Keetelaar gained an extra point on the womens series leader to now tie in first place. John MaCague has also made his intentions known dragging himself up to the leader’s position joining Rob Gibson and David Kieth. With few riders to handicap for the race it still proved a quite difficult task because of the diversity of the field and just to make it a little harder we had a couple more new riders roll up for a ride. 2 riders were off 12 minutes to make up the limit mark followed by bunches of 4 at 8 minutes, 5 ½ minutes, 3 minutes, 45 seconds and then to scratch made up of only 1 rider, John MaCague. All groups started well managing to keep their gaps from being closed in too quickly by their chasing bunches. John MaCague dug deep and rode well latching onto the back of the 2nd scratch bunch about 2km after the telephone exchange; a long and painful 10km no doubt. At the turn around all groups had managed to reduce their gaps by around half, with the exception of the combined 2nd scratch & lone scratch rider still trying to close a 2 minute gap. On the way home past Eppalock Primary School, probably on of the more testing areas of the course, the gaps between the groups had been reduced considerable and the strong 3 minute group appeared to have the race under control. Coming back from Eppalock Primary School, John MaCague started to light up the pace in his group sensing that the race may be getting away from them. This pressure saw his group struggling to hold his wheel although they were giving it their level best. Just before the exchange corner all groups except the back markers had combined with limit struggling to keep away. On the climb through the exchange hill the 2nd scratch group urged John to bridge the now 1 minute gap on his own realizing that they didn’t have the horsepower to close with the gap with him. With a short burst of power John had them by the top of the exchange hill and combined with the strongest rider of the combined groups. Jumping from a fairway out John almost lost the sprint to a fast finishing Ric MaCintosh. Holing onto to win by half a wheel John MaCague took out 1st & Fastest time followed by Ric MaCintosh 2nd, Ricky Lovell 3rd, Mick Lavery 4th, new rider Paul Lomax 5th, Grant Jones 6th and Leigh-Anne Dynon 1st unplaced lady. |

After the first 4 races we have some
clear leaders in both the mens and ladies aggregate. That being said
there are some great opportunities get in the points and win the series;
points are awarded to every rider who turns up and races. Each rider
gets one aggregate point for racing. So simply turning up and contesting
each week will give you 17 points over the series, consistency is the
key to success in the aggregate series so don’t miss out on your
opportunity to gain some valuable points. |

Darren Ellis | The third race of the series saw another great line up of rider with 45 turning up to have a crack at the course. The conditions were again relatively mild and calm making the race a little smoother around the circuit. Limit markers were off 15 minutes with groups of around 6 riders spaced at 12 mins, 9mins, 7mins, 5mins, 3 mins, 1.5mins and scratch. With all bunches out on the circuit the four riders off scratch set a scorching pace and had reeled in the 6 strong 2nd scratch group after only 10km! Not backing off the pace they had the 3 min bunch hanging off their heels not long after the turn around. The remainder of the field had reduced their margins and the 12min and 9 min groups were closing in on the limit markers rapidly. By Eppalock Primary School limit had been caught by the chasing 2 bunches who still held a considerable lead over the back markers. The rest of course saw scratch reeling in each group one by one and as they headed into the foot of the exchange hill, the front markers were just rolling over the crest of the hill. The gap would prove to be too far for the backmarkers to close in by the finish, the combined numbers of the front markers worked well together to hold off the fast finishing field and take out another win for the front markers. In only his 2nd race Darren Ellis took out 1st place followed by another new rider Philip Bone, in 3rd was Peter Ladd, 4th Terry Medcalf, 5th roger King, 6th Gary Leech. First Unplaced lady was Fran Medina and with another fastest time was Matt Wallace. |

After urging everyone to get used to the blustery conditions that
have been typical throughout the series, the conditions certainly
proved my theory wrong and were perfect for the race; very little
wind and a warm to mild temperature. I must first of all pass on my

such a terrific job in putting together the race with only 10 minutes

The first race of the series was held in what could only be described as challenging conditions, with a very stiff head wind to test riders through the first stages of the course. Given that this was pretty much the norm in last years series, riders should be prepared for similar conditions again this year. With a very strong mid field the back markers certainly had their work cut out for them. This week the course proved somewhat too difficult for some of the riders as they started to be shed along the way. A strong 4 minute bunch took advantage of their numbers and progressed their way riding through the field reeling them in bunch by bunch, with only the stronger of those caught managing to hang in there. Scratch and 2nd scratch didn’t come together over the course and only managed to marginally reduced distance to the strong 4 minute group. A strong attack on the home straight and subsequent lead out from Brett Fischer brought up the field to contest what would be a very fast finish. Powerhouse rider Robert Gibson took out first place with an impressive win following his return to cycling after a recent spinal injury. He was followed by Graeme Pilcher, Mick Anderson and Shane Wall, all from the 4 minute group. In next for 5th position was Sheridan Hall, then Dale Lowe and making 7th was Roger King. Robert concluded his return to form was attributed to his elite 5.30am training bunch?

A record field of 51 riders braved the windy conditions of the 2nd last race of the very successful Wednesday Night Series. Major sponsor Greater City Tyres drawing the extra riders chasing victory. The windy conditions caused alot of carnage out on the road and from Eppalock Primary School onwards, many found the going tough and dropped through the bunches. The scratch riders joined with second and third at the turn around, but it was obvious that the front markers had grouped and were in a race of their own. Working well, the large front group dwindled as the stronger riders applied pressure through the hills. Turning into the home straight Red Rocket McCredden led from start to finish in the sprint to earn a well deserved win, with Cindy Magro roding well for a close second. The minor placings were filled in a sprint finish which was so close that the judges had to re-confirm the placing. Once again John the “Ducati” McCague sprinted strongly to take fastest time honors. All entries for the O'Brien classic have to be in by Monday. |

Although the weather cleared up and presented perfect conditions for the evening’s race, the prospect of damp condition did keep some from showing and 40 riders rolled out for the event. Tight gaps between the bunches were up again with 1 minute gaps consistent throughout the field, and bunches of 4 or 5 riders. As per usual, riders were greeted with what always feels like a stiff head wind through to the exchange, followed by a comfortable tail breeze to the turn around. At the turnaround the gaps had closed considerably across the field with the 4 & 5 minute bunch merging only 100 meters after. The 2 & 3 minute bunches and scratch had not yet come together, and were still holding each other off quite well with the combined 4 & 5 minute bunch riding strongly. By the exchange corner the combined 4 & 5 minute bunch had accounted for the rest of the field with only the limit bunch ahead with still a commanding lead. A tactical and powerful move from Kate Fraser and Murray Rankin saw them shed 80% of the riders as they drove it hard through the exchange hill. Only those in good position and a wake up to the move managed to hang on to them over the top. With limit still away and a depleted bunch in chase, the move may have been a bit too early in the race. In the finish it was limits race with the ladies dishing it up to the men on this occasion. Rosemary Britton took out 1st followed by Sabrina Smythe, then new rider Naomi Fountain. In 4th place was Dale Stemmer followed by Andrew Pascoe and in 6th was Kate Fraser. With John MaCague taking out fastest time. |

This race was one of the feature races in the series sponsored by Greater City Tyres-Bendigo. Thank you to Greater City Tyres for their support and sponsorship for this series. Windy conditions again couldn’t keep the 44 riders from having a crack at the race; probably the windiest conditions for the series to date. The handicapper tightened the gaps a little more in an attempt to provide a closer result for the night, with most gaps towards the back of the field around the 1 minute mark. The tough head wind out to the exchange proved a big challenge for the front markers and created some opportunities for the strong scratch bunch to make some ground. The big tail wind from the exchange to the turnaround made for some very fast riding with the speed pushing all bunches to their limits; pressure from some of the stronger riders off the back marks caused some to give up and turn for home. By the turn around the gap across the bunches had closed considerably with a couple already combining and scratch looking like they were going to make it their race. Just before the exchange the 5 min group had reeled in the rest of the field and had scratch closing in fast with only a 50 meter gap to be made up. The exchange hill proved again to be a bit of a benchmark in the race with only the stronger riders able to hang onto the powerful scratch bunch. In the end it was the in form John MaCague with 1st and fastest time followed by Tony Jones, Nick Shipp and Phil Sawyer, with Peter Ladd taking 5th place, Dale Lowe 6th and Chris Weatheritt in 7th. |

Gusty, windy conditions were obviously no deterrent for the riders this week with the numbers continuing to grow week by week; 51 riders lining up to contest. The large number of riders allowed for good sized bunches making up the field. Limit starting off at 16 minutes and the rest of the field spread apart with 1 to 2 minute gaps, most bunches had about 6 riders each to share the load. At the start of the race the riders were greeted with a very stiff head wind which proved to be a bit much for some, dropping off their bunch early. The field had slowly come together by the turn around with only a couple of the groups merging. The 8 minute group had combined and with some solid riding, were still holding a strong gap. Scratch were gradually accounting for the rest of the field with yet again another strong performance. At the end the scratch bunch finished within 1 minute of the winning bunch. Taking out first place with a strong ride was Graham Hartland, followed by Cindy Magro, Dale Stemmer, Terry Wallace and (serial place getters?) Ricky (I’m in the money every week) Lovell, Andrew (me too) Berry and Steve (the new Ricky Lovell) Auld. Fastest Time was yet again! John MaCague. Next weeks racing will be a feature race in the series sponsored by Greater City Tyres. |

The first Wednesday nights race for 2008, although in tough conditions, had a lot of riders roll out for the event. With over 40 riders in the field it made for larger bunches but with the windy and blustery conditions ahead there was not to be too many places to hide. Limit set off into the wind off 16mins with the rest of the field leaving about 2 minutes apart. The first stage of the race through to the exchange corner saw some riders from most bunches suffer under the conditions and drop from their bunch. The pace quickened through to the turn around and the gaps had closed making it anyone’s race at this point. The front bunches had joined together and held a pretty solid break at the exchange. By the time the back makers crossed the exchange hill there was only 100 meters separating the 3 groups with scratch closing in fast. By the final turn the front makers had managed to hold off the field with Paul Dynon taking out 1st and Evelyn Keeteelarr grabbing 2nd, Aileen O’brien 3rd, Leigh-Anne Dynon 4th and Trevor Miles 5th. A fast finish saw John MaCague take out fastest time. |

Like last week, the conditions were quite warm and blustery with the prospect of some storm activity. Not quite as many riders fronted to test themselves in the conditions with this being the last race before Christmas. The front markers left off 18 minutes and were hotly pursued by 6 other bunches. Most bunches lost at least one rider along the way either with mechanical problems or finding the conditions and pace of the race to hard. By the turnaround scratch had combined with 2nd scratch and had closed the gap considerably on the rest of the field. Limit still held a commanding lead which was going to take a big effort to close. At the exchange hill only limit and the front bunches were still away. With not far to go Evelyn Keeteelar rode away from her co-marker to steal a comfortable victory. Paul Dynon & Steve Auld attacked on the final climb breaking up their group to finish with 2nd & 3rd positions. Rick Mitchell hung on to take 4th and a fast finishing John MaCague took out 5th position and fastest time. |

Blustery warm conditions greeted the 32 riders entering the evening’s race. Previous weeks results have had the mid field and front markers winning and leaving the back markers with what seemed an almost impossible chase. This week the handicapper made some adjustments to the marks to give the back markers a shorter gap to chase. The tough head wind and smaller bunches made it pretty hard going for most groups through to the exchange corner. Whilst most of the bunches hadn’t lost any riders at this point, the tough conditions took the sting out of some groups allowing the stronger groups to close the gaps by the turnaround. Soon after the turn around, scratch had accounted for 2nd & 3rd scratch with most riders struggling to hold the pace of the fast paced scratch bunch; Mal Balnaves was the only rider from the 2nd scratch group able to hang in there. The scratch group then rode through the rest of the field with the exception of the 9 minute group. At the exchange corner an attack led by Ray Colwell saw a small bunch of riders break away from their main group to try and steal the win. A strong and persistent ride from John Macague, Tony Jones & Justin Mollison was well rewarded when they caught and rode away from Ray’s break away group with 500 meters to go. A strong finish saw John Macague, yet again, take out another 1st and fastest time, closely followed Tony Jones, Justin Mollison & Mal Balnaves. Ray Colwell hung in there to take 5th place. Ps: Mick Brady did race this week but for some reason didn’t win??? |

With 34 riders lining up to race, the new Emu Creek circuit is certainly proving to be a popular race amongst the competitors. With the still conditions for the afternoon it was proving ideal for what would be a pretty fast race overall. The diversity amongst the field with a lot of newer riders on older riders returning had the handicapper deliberating over the marks for some time. Limit were again given a very sizable start at 18 minutes which was always going to be a big gap to close by the back markers. The remainder of the field was set at 11 min, 9, min 7 min, 5 min, 3 min, 1 min & Scratch. The pace was quick right from the start with the aid of a very slight tail wind. By the turn around scratch had caught and combined with 2nd scratch, the 5 & 7 minute group had combined and the 11 & 9 minute groups had combined also. Limit still held a reasonable gap and several of the bunches had lost some of their riders along the way. The combined 11 & 9 minute group accounted for the front markers about 4 km from the finish and still maintained a significant gap from the depleted 5 & 7 minute bunch. Scratch had combined with the 2 bunches in front and had set a very fast pace but were still too far back to account for the next group ahead. In the end it was another well deserved win from Mick (I win every week) Brady, Grant Jones 2nd, Aileen O’brien 3rd, Paul Stucco 4th, Andrew Berry 5th , with fastest time being taken out by John MaCague at an impressive average speed of just under 42Kph. |

A field of 37 riders turned up for Wednesday night’s race despite the prospect of some predicted thunder storm activity. The limit bunch headed off leaving an even spread of bunches to chase with scratch needing to make up an 18 minute gap. The conditions were consistent with previous races, with a head wind to start and some tough riding through to the telephone exchange. None of the bunches appeared to be making any strong gains on the field at this point. The pace quickened through to the turn around with the assistance of a tail breeze. A few riders struggled in the conditions and couldn’t stay with their bunch weakening their group and allowing the chasing riders to catch. At the school turn most bunches had combined to form 3 or 4 larger bunches with limit still holding a commanding gap. By the climb up the exchange hill scratch had accounted for all but the couple of groups of front markers. At the finish it was a depleted limit bunch taking out the race with Brad Wakefeild 1st, Neil Hinton 2nd and Evelyn Keettaalarr 3rd, this was followed 100 meters behind by the chasing bunch with Norm Giri 4th and Paul Stucco 5th. The remainder of the field finished not too far back With Justin Mollison taking out fastest time. |

The 3rd race of the series was held in testing conditions with 19 riders turning out to brave the elements and test out the new finish 1.5km before the last turn. Limit riders set a cracking pace down the back straight looking to gain an advantage on the field. This was not to be the story of the night with all bunches also taking advantage of the blustery conditions and the advantage deplete. With most bunches discovering quickly the only way to escape the wind was to work turns, there seemed to be fewer riders dropped than previous weeks highlighting the handicapper’s attentiveness. After the turn around it was evident the race was going to be between front markers and back markers. A much depleted scratch bunch worked well as they picked up riders along the way highlighting their class and keeping them in contention for fastest time honours. Much to the vocal disappointment of members of a hard working 3rd scratch bunch, they were red flagged at the primary school with a late turning local. Their efforts squandered, it made it easier for scratch to pick them up but doing so it was great to see riders doing their best to keep the pace up. After a hard climb through the exchange the front markers battled out a tightly contested sprint with Mick Anderson proving too strong storming to the new finish line whilst John Macague showed his fitness and powered away from the back markers to win easily. Great work all riders, handicappers and officials in testing conditions. |

Another large field of 36 riders lined up to race in the warm and breezy conditions; and once again the tough conditions would test the riders. After last weeks result our handicapper made some fine adjustments to the bunches, varying the intervals from 1 mins to 4 mins, with the limit markers off 17 mins. The 12 min bunch struggled to hold the wheel of Chris McCormick who rode away from his bunch before the exchange corner. At the turn around the gaps had closed considerably with each bunch within sight of each other. Chris was still riding strongly on his own and a certainty to take the win. On the crest of the exchange hill there was only 100 meters between scratch and the 5 min bunch, with the 9 & 12 min riders still away. In the Chris McCormick took out a comfortable win followed by Murray Rankin (9 min), James Thompson (12 min), Murray Cordell (12 min) and Grant Jones (9 min), with fastest time being taken out by Tony Jones. |

It was a fantastic first race of the series, with good numbers of riders turning up to test the new circuit. It was also great to see plenty of support on offer from onlookers assisting with corner marshalling roles; this is greatly appreciated by all of the riders. Several new and many older returning riders were out for a crack! It was going to be a hard field to handicap. The limit bunches started off 17 minutes, then, bunches leaving about 2 minutes apart, followed by a quality scratch bunch and the field was set. Most of the front bunches failed to keep it together into the stiff head wind through to the telephone exchange losing riders along the way. The pace got quite swift along Axe Creek Road with the breeze behind the riders and the 4 minute bunch quickly making ground on the rest of the field. Combining the stronger riders from the 6 minute bunch the 4 minute bunch set a cracking pace through to the turn around. In the testing conditions 2nd scratch withered as scratch continued to apply the pressure through out the climb past the exchange hill. Not loosing any time after the halfway point to the scratch bunch the combined 4 min bunch had reeled in the remainder of the field and contested a hard fought sprint. |
