52km PHILIP J EDDY Handicap - Emu Creek

The Philip J Eddy 52km. Feature Race at Emu Creek is accepted as one of the most "Trying" races on the Calendar, and together with temperatures in the low thirties, it was going to be a trial of strength for the field of fifty-seven riders. The course headed out along Storey's Road, turning left towards Sutton Grange, swinging left into the wind at Axe Creek Road, then up Exchange Hill, to complete the circuit again. The handicapper divided the field into nine bunches, with Scratch conceding between four and twenty-nine minutes, all bunches had at least seven riders, with the exception of Limit, with lone rider Ricky Mitchell, doing battle on his own.

The seven rider Scratch bunch really pushed strongly to make up ground, but it was not until the second half of the Exchange, that they made up some ground. It was again the last seven kilometres of the Exchange hill that would bring the field together, all the bunches had lost riders, and it was a combination of the four, six and nine minute bunches, that was putting the pressure on in the last four kilometres. However, at the run along Axe Creek Road, in the second lap, it was Roger Fuller and Trevor Mc Dougall, of the nineteen minute bunch, were out in front, with Steve Auld, Peter Hayes and Carl Louchard, of the fifteen minute bunch, chasing hard, about 1.5 minutes behind.

This was how it stayed until the finish, with Roger Fuller [19m] First, a very popular winner, in a time of 1h 33m 18s, an average of 34kmh., followed by T. McDougall [19m], P.Hayes [15m], S. Auld [15m], J. Mollison [Sc], C. Louchard [15m], A. Favaloro [4m], M. Rankin [6m], D. Cheal [Sc], S. Muller [4m].

Fastest Time: Justin Mollison, 1h 16m 0s, an average of 41kmh.

Next Race; Sunday 5th. February, The 45km.Club Handicap, 10:00am, at Newbridge.

Criteriums - Mayfair Park

There were over forty entries for the Mayfair Park Criteriums, which, considering the contingent of members gone to the Tour Down Under, was excellent. The field was divided into four grades, with A and B grades cycling for thirty minutes, plus three laps, and C and D grades cycling for twenty minutes, plus three laps. C and D grades had fewer ricers, but the competition was just as fierce.

The lead changed a number in the D grade event, Tom De vries and Evelyn Keetlar pushing the pace, it was in the final lap that made the difference, with E.Keetlar edging T. De vries, in a time of 25min.15 secs., with Di Jane finishing in third place.

The pattern was much the same in C grade, with the group closely knit for the first laps, and at the bell lap it was going to be a close finish, with Norman Geary winning in atime of 24min. 53sec. followed by Roger King and Gary Johnstone.

B grade was more challenging with Ben Knight breaking away, but being pulled back on the tight circuit, in the final sprint it was Ben Knight first in a time of 33min. 43 sec., followed by Tony Murphy and Beth Duryea.

A grade, as was expected, was hotly contested from the gun, with numerous riders making a break, but again, to no avail, with, after a very fast final lap, Andrew Joiner was first, ina time of 32min. 45sec., followed by Ashley Harding and Justin Mollison.

Next Race; Philip Eddy & Partners 52km. Handicap at Emu Creek, Sunday 29th.January 10:00am. [Summer Series Wednesday 25th. 6:30pm.]

35km Graded Scratch Races - Woodstock

The Central Victorian Veteran's Cycling Club eased back into the racing season after the Christmas break with a series of graded scratch races on Sunday morning around the 35 Km Power’s Road/Newbridge circuit at Woodstock. The forty-five riders were split into five divisions ranging from six in A grade up to 13 in B grade.

The small field in A grade made it difficult for anyone to get away despite several attempts from Darryl Stewart, Paul Dalton and Paul Volk, but eventually Geoff Bennett made a move about 5 kilometres out which stuck and he took out the race comfortably from Paul Dalton and Carl Harris in a time of 55 minutes 39 seconds.

The big field in B grade led to a hot pace and the pack overtaking the A grade race before Newbridge. It turned into a race of attrition back to Newbridge as the wind took its toll and only half a dozen lined up for the sprint. Chris Davidge took out the win in 52 minutes 2 seconds, just shading Shane Standfield and Paul Dynon on the line.

The twelve riders who lined up for C grade were content to stay together but maintained a brisk pace. Leigh-Anne Dynon proved much too good in the sprint to hold out Ken Hamilton and Jim Field in 56 minutes 34 seconds.

Wendy Bennett prevailed in D grade to make it a family quinella after Geoff took out the A grade race, winning by a good margin from Trevor McDougall and Di Jane in 61 minutes 22 seconds.

The E grade race proved to be the most exciting of the day after Eve Keetelar and Steve Bright got away on the first hill and weren’t brought back until half a kilometre to go when Alan Sandford, Gary Saunders and try rider Dan McLean managed to bridge the gap. Alan took out the win in 63 minutes 36 seconds from Eve Keetelar and Steve Bright who held on to take the minor places.

Next week’s races will be graded criteriums at Mayfair Park on Sunday morning. Note the later start time of 10:30 a.m. to allow the Bendigo Club to finish their crits.

56km CVVCC Christmas Handicap - Woodstock

The Central Victorian Veteran's Cycling Club wound up its 2011 season at Woodstock on Saturday with the traditional Christmas Handicap sponsored by Perrow’s Paints. A fantastic field of sixty-eight riders faced the starter in fine but windy conditions for the 56 kilometre loop through Newbridge, Tarnagulla and Laanecoorie and back to Newbridge for the run home to Woodstock. The field was split into large bunches of between eight and ten riders with scratch giving starts of three, six, eight, twelve, eighteen, twenty-two and twenty-six minutes.

Lone limit rider Jack Corry headed off with a thirty-two minute advantage but was overhauled before Newbridge where he worked in with the second limit bunch. The assisting tail or cross-tail wind all the way to Tarnagulla ensured none of the bunches joined up, but all groups lost riders through the hills as the heat and wind took their toll. Scratch and second scratch made steady progress to bridge across to third scratch with ten kilometres to go, but the eight minute group was holding them all at bay as the field rode into a strong headwind towards the finish at Woodstock. With a kilometre to go there were only three survivors from the second limit bunch and the indomitable Jack Corry still hanging on, and in a gutsy performance they held off the rest of the field to win by a hundred metres.

Graeme Lockwood won in a time of 1 hour 45 minutes 31 seconds at an average of 31.8 km/hr ahead of Jack Trickey and Aileen O’Brien (all off 26 minutes). Jack Corry (32 minutes) was 4th, followed by Paul Dynon 5th (8 min), Mick Anderson 6th (8 min), Noel Knight 7th (12 min), Dale Lowe 8th (8 min), James Thompson 9th (8 min) and Jenny Farrow 10th (18 min). Fastest time went to Justin Mollison in 1hr 21 m 24 sec for an average of 41.3 km/hour.

Following the race and Christmas barbecue the 2011 aggregate and J&T Shield was awarded to Justin Mollison who has had a stellar year. The “Harry’s Handicap” award for most improved rider went to Terry O’Brien in recognition of his startling progress since the start of the year.

The club and officials will take a well-earned break until the first Wednesday night race on January 11th 2012 and the first weekend fixture on Sunday January 15th at 10:00 a.m. with graded scratch races at Woodstock. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to all!

35km Pilcher Building Contractors Team Time Trial - Woodstock

The Thirty-five Km, Pilcher Builders Team Time Trial at Woodstock, had an entry of thirty-eight riders. A Team Time Trial event is an interesting concept, each team must have at least five riders in it, and each team is a cross section of the riders abilities. The Handicapper nominates
the Team Captain, usual chosen for his/her experience and ability. Then comes the difficult part, when the remaining riders are chosen, to, hopefully, balance the ability of each team.

The Handicapper decided on seven teams, leaving at two minute intervals, and each trying to bring
home the fastest time. Each team had to ride to the speed the slowest rider could maintain, until the eleven kilometre mark, where the speed would increase, and one rider could drop off. The same happened at the twenty-two kilometre mark, when another rider could drop off, but at least three riders had to finish, and it was the third riders time that would be taken for that Team.

This type of race gave riders, who might never have a win, to ride with more experienced riders, who in turn, had to consider their slowest team mate. It was a well handicapped race, with six of the seven teams finishing with less than a minute between them.

Team two was successful, with Shane Thompson, leading his team to victory, in a time of 56m 54sec, followed by team four, With Chris Weatheritt the Leader,in a time of 56m 56secs. with Geoff Bennett leading team five into third place, in a time of 57m 35secs

Next Race: Saturday, 17th December; Perrow Paint's 56Km.Christmas Handicap at Woodstock, 2:00 PM, followed by a barbecue.

Duty: P.Dynon, C.Halliday, A. Harding, D. Hare, P. Harper

47km CVVCC Memorial Handicap - Woodstock

The fifty-one entrants for The 47km. CVVCC Memorial Handicap at Woodstock, new they were in for a turbulant ride with the strong, gusty wind, seemingly blowing in all directions at once. The course took the riders across to Newbridge, fighting a strong cross wind, turning heading back South, into a very strong, strength sapping wind, towards Laannecoorie, where the turn down the Maldon road gave the riders respite, with a strong tail wind. Reaching Newbridge , the course headed back the twelve kilometeres to the finish at Woodstock The Handicapper decided on eight bunches, with eight in six of them, and two in each of the Scratch and Limit bunches. Scratch conceded 1m, 4m, 6m, 8m, 12m, 16m, and 26minutes to Limit.

The two Limit riders headed off, knowing, like Scratch, that only having two riders would make it more difficult and give the larger bunches an edge. All the riders were trying to maintain their positions, or improve it if possible, this was going to be difficult, with the large groups holding their own. Limit was still out in front heading for Laanecoorie, but the strong face wind was taking it's toll. Meanwhile the two Scratch riders were strugling to maintain the gap, but holding their own up to Newbridge, however, with only two riders, the ride into the wind to the Laanecoorie turn pushed them to their limit, losing thirty seconds to the one minute bunch, on that leg.The twelve minute bunch was moving along nicely, picking up the sixteen minute bunch, just after Laanecoorie, this made the bunch about fifteen strong, however, at the turn back to Woodstock, three of the twelve minute bunch, plus Jack Trickey from the sixteen minute bunch broke away, catching the two struggling Limit riders about nine kilometres from home. Shortly after Greg Chapman broke away, leaving the other three to follow. There was, however a move at the back of the field, with the one minute bunch making headway through the ranks, catching the four minute bunch half-way between Laanecoorie and Newbridge, and then overtaking the six minute bunch, after turning back to Woodstock.

This large bunch was shedding riders at a fast rate, leaving about a dozen to head for the line. However Greg Chapman was still out front, pushing himself to the limit, unfortunately, for Greg, it was just not enough, with the bunch catching him on the last hill, a bit less than a kilometre from the finish. It was a tired group that pushed for the line, with Rick McIntosh [1m], in First place, and Fastest time, of 1h-13m-.53s, an average of 38.46kmh, followed by, S.Thompson [1m], P. Volk [1m], A. Favaloro [1m], S. Wall [4m], M. Grealy [1m], D. Barri [4m], G. Chapman [12m], M. Rankin [6m], and in 10th. place N. Sens [4m]

62km PETER BAKER & ASSOCIATES Handicap - Woodstock

The thirty-seven intrepid riders, who had entered The Peter Baker & Associates 62km. Handicap at Woodstock, knew that the "Nice drop of rain" and strong gusty winds would affect their ride, but it turned out that the greater danger was the rain slicked rail crossings at Arnold and Llanelly, bringing six riders down, but thankfully without serious injury. The course headed North from Woodstock, through Newbridge, pushing on to Bridgewater, through Llanelly, then back through Newbridge to finish at Woodstock. The handicapper divided the field into eight bunches, with Scratch conceding 2, 6, 19, 14, 22, 26, and 36 miutes to the two Limit riders.

The bunches headed off into a strong head wind, with Limit strugling to maintain the gap. It was different at the other end of the field, with Scratch picking up the bunch in front about two kilometres along the Bridgewater Road, while the six minute bunch caught the ten minute bunch, about four kilometres before Bridgewater, and the fourteen minutes at Arnold. The twenty-two and twenty-six minutes bunches had unlucky starts, with punctures, but came together after Newbridge. The two Limit riders continued to lead the field, and it was not until the forty-five kilometre mark at Llanelly, that Eve Keetelar, Jack Trickey and Rick Mitchell pulled them in, with the Limit riders tagging on. It was about nine kilometres from the finish that Scratch, and riders from three other bunches caught the leaders, and shortly after, Andrew Pascoe made a break for it, but evergreen Tony Jones, bridged the gap, and not long after Justin Mollison broke away and joined them, the terrible trio were together once again. This was undoubtedly going to be the first three places, leaving a large bunch behind to contest the minor places.

First was Andrew Pasco [Sc], in at ime of 1h 32m 06s, an average of 40.5kmh., followed by T. Jones [Sc], J. Mollison [Sc], R. McIntosh[2m], A. Hayhow[Sc], S.Wall [6m],C. Draper [6m] & S. Thompson, [6m] equal7th,R. Gilbey[6m], C. Fraser[2m] .

47km Graded Scratch Handicap - Woodstock

The thirty-three riders who entered for the 47km. Club Graded scratch Handicap at Woodstock, realised that the rain and the wind would make their task, just that much more difficult. The course was the Powell's Road / Newbridge, plus the extra six kilometres, out and back to the Maryborough Road. The handicapper divided the field into four grades, with A grade fielding eleven rides, and the others with seven each.

Most likely the surprise of the afternoon was the action in the A Grade field. It was just two kilometres into the race when Daryl Stewart and Shane Thompson broke away from the bunch. The bunch did not make any great effort at this stage, as there was still forty-five kilometres to go. However in a grat effort from Stewart and Thompson, they maintained their lead, it was not until the thirty-five kilometre mark, that Shane Thompson eased off, and fell back to the chasing bunch, allowing Daryl Stewart to maintain his lead, and finish comfortably in first place, followed by Nick Shipp and Justin Mollison.

The B Grade was a much more sedate event, with the riders deciding to ride the race as a bunch, and let the final sprint be the decider. 1st. Peter Kennedy, 2nd. Daniel Barri, 3rd. James Thompson.

The C Grade race was uneventful until the thirty-five kilometre mark, when Fran Medina and Ken Hamilton made a break, but were caught at the turn around, with six kilometeres to the finish. 1st. Ken Hamilton, 2nd. Gary Leech, 3rd Andrew Berry.

In D grade the stronger riders kept the group together, and it was not until after the Clubhouse was reached, that the pace increased. It was an all in sprint that decided the places, with 1st. Ross Ogilvie, 2nd Richard Wright, 3rd, Ricky Mitchell.

Next Race:The Peter Baker & Associate 62Km. Handicap 2:00pm at Woodstock. Duty: P.Dalton, C. Davidge, T. de Vries, S. Dellavedova, C. Draper.

56km Club Handicap - Newbridge

The fifty-eight riders entered for the Club's 56km. Handicap at Newbridge, were hydrating more than usual, prior to the start, with the the temperature about three degrees higher than expected. Combined with hot gusty winds and long climbs, it was conditions that could catch you unawares, unless you kept drinking during the race. The course headed due west to Tarnagulla, swinging right towards 15km. of climbing, up Mt. Moliagul, heading North to Rheola, then back down the middle road to LLanelly, then the last seven km. down the highway to finish at Newbridge. The Handicapper divided the field into nine bunches, with Scratch conceding 1min., 4m, 6m, 8m, 11m, 14m, 18m, 26m, and 35minutes to the "Golden Oldie" Dave Keith, the sole Limit rider.

Apart from Scratch, with two riders, and Limit, there were at least six riders in each bunch. The start was testing, with two kilometres of hills, in the first three. Scratch got away to a good start, catching the one minute bunch 13km. into the race, then pulling in the four minute bunch just before Llanelly. The Limit rider was still holding his own, but behind him the twenty-six minute bunch was having it's own battles, with riders constantly trying to break away. Finally, on the climb at Moliagul, Alan Sandford and Anthony Clarke broke away, and a little later, A.Clarke surged leaving A. Sandford in his wake, with Clarke in pursuit of the Limit rider. At the back of the field the six minute bunch had caught the eight minutes at Moliagul, and the back of the field was merging into one large bunch, with riders dropping off as the race entered the final stages. Finally A. Clarke cught the Limit rider at the forty km. mark, with the pair working together for about seven kms., until Limit could not maintain the pace, and just before Llanelly A. Clarke pushed ahead, trying to maintain his lead over the large combined bunch, not too far behind.

The eleven minute bunch had overtaken the the fourteen minute just before Llannelly, but the race was coming together just before the top of the Newbridge Hill. A. Clarke was virtually assured of a win, and with about two kilometres to the finish, the Limit rider was overtaken by a tweny-five strong bunch of riders. With Anthony Clarke [26m] already over the line in a time of 1h-49m-22s, an average of 30.7kmh., the packed sprint saw P.Dalton [6m] 2nd., followed by J. Mollison [Sc], P.Volk [1m], A. Pascoe [Sc], R. Lovell [6m], M. Banfield [1m], S. Thompson [4m], in eighth place.

Fastest Time: Justin Mollison [Sc] 1h-23m-57s, an average of 40.2 kmh.

56km Colwell Brothers 2 Day Aggregate Classice- Woodstock RACE 1

The temperature was just on thirty degrees, along with strong gusty side winds, when the fifty-eight riders lined up for the fifty-six kilometre, first day of the “Colwell Brothers Two Day Aggregate
Classic at Woodstock. The course headed through Newbridge to Tarnagulla, then swinging back south to Lannecoorie, then back down the Maldon Road to Newbridge, then the last twelve kilometres, back to the finish at Woodstock. The Handicapper opted for, mostly, large bunches, with Scratch giving, 1m, 4m, 8m, 13, 19m, 24m, and 35minutes to the two Limit riders.

Scratch, with only three riders, always had a difficult job. Just after Tarnagulla, they pulled in the one minute bunch, and with twenty kilometres to go, the four minute bunch was overtaken, initially the combined bunch had over twenty riders, pushing hard, with some finding the pace too hot. The two Limit riders were still holding the lead, and it was not until the thirty-seven kilometre mark, that the nine strong twenty-four minute bunch finally pulled them in. The eight minute bunch had caught the thirteen minute riders about five kilometres from the finish, however it was the nineteen minute bunch, really working well together, striving to catch the leaders, finally doing so at eight kilometres from the finish.

It was to be a fight to the finish, with Pat Pontell [19m] taking the honours, in a time of 1h 39m 58sec., an average of 33.7kmh., followed by W. Bennett [19m], T. McDougall [19m], and in a great ride J. Corry [Limit], N.Hinton [19m], D. Jane [24m], R. Ogilvie [24m], A.Clarke [24m], D. Colwell [8m] S.Hall [8m]

Fastest Time J. Mollison 1h, 23m, 08sec. An average of 40.5kmh.

56km Colwell Brothers 2 Day Aggregate Classice- Woodstock RACE 1

The second day of the Colwell Brothers Aggregate ws held on Sunday morning in perfect conditions for the thirty-six riders to take on the thirty-five kilometre Power's Road circuit. The twoScratch riders were chasing groups at one, three, five, eight eleven, fifteen, and lone Limit rider, Jack Corry on twenty minutes. All bunches started quickly with the aid of a light southerly breeze, ensuring a fast run up Power's Road.

Even at this early stage it was clear that the eleven and fifteen minute buncheswere the form riders. Scratch, second and third were still apart at Newbridge. Only the five minute bunch had been able to catch the group in front. there was no holding the leaders once they turned into the final leg back to Woodstock, working strongly together until the last few hundred metres.

In a thrilling finish, Sabrina Smythe held out Peter O'Brien and Di Jane [All off 15minutes], to take out the race, in a time of 1h 3m 09sec., an average of 33kmh. The rest of the field was strong put behind them. Fourth place went to Pat Pontell, followed by Wendy Bennett, Evelyn Keetelar, Pam Robertson, Neil Hinton, [All off 11minutes], Jack Corry [Limit] held on for 9th place, with David Colwell [5m], the best of the rest in 10th place.

Fastest Time: Andrew Pascoe 50m, 49sec., an average of 41.1 kmh.

47km Club Handicap - Woodstock

The 47 km Club Handicap at Woodstock, had a pleasing entry of thirty-seven riders, considering a contingent of twenty-five club members had gone to Warrnambool, for the penultimate event in the State Aggregate Championship. The thirty-seven riders were divided into seven bunches, with Scratch giving 2m, 4m, 6m, 11m, 17m, and Limit on 22minutes.

They started at Woodstock, across to Newbridge, veering south-east to Lannecoorie, back down the Maldon Road to Newbridge, then swinging back to finish at Woodstock. The four riders in Limit, were picked up, very early, by the seventeen minute bunch, at Newbridge on the way out, and although Limit held on for a few kilometres, the pace was to prove too strong for three of them. Scratch had started pretty strongly, and caught the two minute bunch near Laanecoorie, and were to finish the race in a group.Meanwhile, five minutes earlier, the four minute bunch had caught the six minute bunch at Laanecoorie.

The eleven minute bunch were in limbo, but working hard to catch the, now favourite, seventeen minute bunch. The seventeen minute bunch was still leading into the last five kilometres, however the eleven minute bunch was making headway into the gap.

On the last hill, about eight hundred metres from the finish, riders were dropping off the leading bunch, and about the two hundred metre mark, Trevor McDougall went for the line, Tom deVries [17m] chased, and pushed over the line in first place, in a time of 1h-24m-02s, and average of 33.7kmh., followed by T.McDougall [17m], N.Hinton [17m], S. Bright [17m], R. Ogilvie [Limit], S.Hall [11m], G. Leech [11m].

In a surprise turn-up, Andrew Hayhow broke away from Scratch, about ten kilometres from the finish, maintaining the gap, to finish, first fastest, in1h-10m-40s, an average of 40kmh.

65km Harry's Handicap - Melville Caves

Ignoring morning rain and threatening skies, a big field of forty-nine riders took to the roads around Melville Caves on Saturday afternoon for the Central Victorian Veteran's Cycling Club’s annual Harry’s Handicap sponsored by club stalwart and avid photographer Richard Bailey.

The challenging 60 kilometre course started at the bottom of the Melville Caves access road and went to Logan, with a couple of testing climbs in the first few kilometres. From there the race headed towards Wedderburn before turning right a couple of kilometres out of town for the run back to the Caves and the two kilometre up-hill drag to the finish line in the picnic area. The big field meant big bunches except for the four person scratch group who were giving starts of 3, 7, 10, 16, 20 and 25 minutes and a three-man limit bunch on 35 minutes.

Conditions were perfect during the race and the hills turned out to be the deciding factor as groups started shedding riders right from the first climbs. Most of the 20 minute bunch stayed together and made steady progress as they reeled in the bunches in front. Behind them the seven minute third scratch bunch swallowed up fourth scratch between Logan and Wedderburn and the sixteen minute bunch with about 15 kilometres to go. Second scratch had the weight of numbers needed to stay away from scratch but still hadn’t made contact with the bunches ahead at the foot of the final climb. The whole race was reshuffled in the last two kilometres as tired legs took over. Matt Grealy recovered from overshooting the final corner and he and Daniel Barrie jumped way from the main peloton to chase down the remnants of the twenty minute bunch who had shelled the other out-markers.

Matt (7 minutes) pulled out all stops in the last kilometre to overtake Greg Chapman (2nd), Bruce Tonkin (3rd) and Andrew Berry (4th and all off 20 minutes) and win convincingly in a time of 1 hour 39 minutes 38 seconds. Daniel Barry (7 minutes) just fell short of catching the others to run 5th. Andrew Joiner (3 minutes) and Andy Hayhow (3 minutes) flew up the hill to lead second scratch home and take 6th and 7th respectively, while Ricky Lovell (7 minutes), Murray Rankin (7 minutes) and Darryl Stewart (3 minutes) filled the other placings.

Justin Mollison recorded the fastest time of 1 hour 33 minutes thirty-two seconds.

As soon as the race finished the skies opened up. Torrential rain and large hailstones threatened to drown out the presentation, but fortunately the President is made of sterner staff and carried on regardless.

Next Saturday’s race is 47 kilometres at Woodstock. Corner stewards are Peter Nott, Peter O’Brien, Gerard O’Halloran, Andrew Purcell and Gary Saunders.

65km Bart n Print Handicap - Bridgewater

The bARt 'n' PRINt 65km Handicap at Bridgewater, had a pleasing entry of thirty-eight riders. The
sun was shining, but somewhat offset by the strong northerly wind, with gusts up to 25kmh., would certainly affect the riders, and on the face of it, the difficult conditions would give the Scratch riders, a bit more of an advantage. The course headed north-west to Inglewood, straight into the wind, cutting west across the rolling hillsto Kingower, then heading down the middle road from Rheola to Llanelly, across to Newbridge, then the final 12km. To the finish at Bridgewater. The field was divided into eight groups, with Scratch giving 3m, 7m, 10m, 14m, 18m, 25m, and 36m, to the three Limit riders.

Limit lead off nto the wind, with Gary Saunders setting the pace. The five rider 25minute bunch were pulling well together, looking strong enough to be winners. Scratch got off to a great start, with the four riders working smoothly, and did not seem to notice the strong wind, catching the 3minute bunch at the 20km. mark, leaving a number of riders in their wake. The 7minute bunch was looking very strong, picking up the10 minute bunch at the 18km. point, and not too much later took the 14minute bunch under it's wing, making, the pace too hot for some of the riders. Meanwhile at the front of the race, Limit had lost a rider at Llanelly, but the remaining two riders were stil pushing into the strong, gusty cross wind, that was buffeting riders on the long open stretch between Newbridge and Bridgewater. The large combined bunch finally pulled in the 18minute bunch, with about 18km. to the finish, still leaving Scratch with the task in front of them. The main bunch finally caught, G. Saunders, the lone Limit rider, 8km. from the finish, it
looked like the winner was in this bunch. However Scratch had powered on, catching them 4km. from the finish.

As the 2km. mark loomed, the stuggle for positions started, but it was to no avail, as the slightly rested Scratch bunch broke away, with Russell Gilbey, making a terrific effort, latched on, holding them to the finish. Finishing at 55kmh., Andrew Pascoe, in a time of, 1h 34m 57sec., an average of 41kmh. eased out. J. Mollison [Sc] 2nd., T. Jones [Sc] 3rd, followed by R. Gilbey [3m],
A. Favaloro [7m], M. Rankin [7m], S. Wall [7m], S. Thompson [7m], D. Colwell [10m], and in tenth place G. Butcher [10m].

54km Blue Eucy Classic - Inglewood IGA Handicap- Newbridge

The Central Victorian Veteran's Cycling Club travelled north to Inglewood on Saturday for the renowned Blue Eucy Classic sponsored by Peter Moore of Inglewood IGA. Overcast but mild conditions greeted the 34 riders as they set out on a 54 kilometre trek through Kingower, Rheola and Llanelly before finishing back on the outskirts of Inglewood. Even bunches of four to six cyclists headed off at largish intervals chasing lone limit man Jack Corry who enjoyed a 30 minutes start over a strong four rider scratch group.

It was always going to be tough for the scratch riders chasing a three minute gap to second who in turn had a four minute gap to third scratch, and this turned out to be the case. The first fifteen kilometres proved to be hard work with rolling hills and long uphill drags made even tougher by a nagging headwind, and time gaps were shrinking steadily when the race turned left at Rheola for the long run to Llanelly. The first catch came just before Llanelly when the surviving four riders of the third scratch bunch caught the six riders off 11 minutes. Behind them the second scratch bunch were two minutes down and working well to stay away from scratch. The pace picked up once the race turned north at Llanelly and the combined third and fourth scratch groups steadily gobbled up all those in front. The race came together in the last few kilometres and the pace came off as riders with something left in their legs started thinking about the sprint. Terry Medcalf used his local knowledge to surprise the field with an attack 500 meters from the line which caught many riders napping.

His move generated immediate responses as a couple of other riders tried to get off the front of the bunch, but pure sprinting ability won the day when Terry Schintler (7 minutes) and Shane Thompson (7 minutes) put the foot down in the last 200 meters, with Terry winning comfortably in the time of 1 hour 25 minutes 45 seconds at an average speed of 38.2 km/hour. Shane ran second and was followed home by Jim Field (16 minutes) in third, Greg Chapman (20 minutes) fourth, Ray Colwell (11 minutes) 5th, Murray Rankin (7 minutes) 6th and James Thompson (7 minutes) 7th. Terry Medcalf (16 minutes) hung on to take 8th from David Colwell (11 minutes) 9th and Bernie Leahy (16 minutes) coming home in 10th place.

Second scratch finished thirty seconds behind with scratch less than a minute further back, Justin Mollison taking out fastest time in 1 hour twenty minutes twenty seconds for an average speed of 40.8 km/hr.

Next week’s race is the October Feature Race at Bridgewater sponsored by BART’n’PRINT over 58 kilometres.

Corner stewards are Ev Keetelar, Peter Kennedy, Justin Leske, Graeme Lockwood and Dave Maltby.

35km CLUB Graded Scratch Race - Woodstock

The 35km. Club Graded Scratch at Woodstock had a great entry of thirty-three riders. The field was divided into five grades, with A grade having eight riders, B nine, and the other three grades with five each. The course took the riders down Power's Road, swinging west to Newbridge, then the last 12km. to the clubhouse and finish line.

The A grade group set off first, and was to be the most aggressive bunch in the race. Justin Mollison was the first to test the strength of the group, but was reeled in shortly after. Geoff. Bennett was next to test the resolve of the bunch, staying away for about two kilometres, then back in the fold. Barry Jane made the final effort about 3km. from the finish, but showing a great burst of speed, J. Mollison overtook him about 150 metres from the line, in a time of 55minutes, an average of 38.2 kmh. Second place went to J. Mollison, followed by G. Bennett in third place.

The group of B grade riders left two minutes later, and apart from a foray from Chris Draper they were content to stick together, however, after losing Shane Dellavedova with a puncture, another three riders found the pace too hard by the time they reached Newbridge. It was a bunch of five riders that sprinted for the line, with Ken Hamilton successful, in a time of 1hr. 1min 55sec., an average of 33.8 kmh., second C. Draper, third D. Hare.

The riders in C grade were content to stick together, but losing one rider early on. It was an all in effort in the last sprint, with Bruce Tonkin, in a time of 1hr. 02min. 07sec., an average of 33.5kmh., followed by J.Farrow and G. Chapman.

The D grade riders were content to ride in a bunch, and contest the race on the finish line. Di Jane emerged from the pack in a time of 1hr. 8min. 39Sec., an average of 30.6kmh., followed by followed by N. Hinton and E. Keetelar.

The five rider E grade group was content to work together, but lost a rider half-way to Newbridge, Steve Bright was intent on keeping a uniform pace, to get the best result. The last leg to Woodstock was to prove decisive, with the pressure on, and Steve Bright and Peter O' Brien moving away from the others, with Bright ending up a clear winner, in a time of 1hr. 13min. 07sec., an average of 28.8kmh., followed by P. O'Brien and R. Wright.

Next Race: Saturday 8th. October, 54km. Blue Eucy IGA Handicap at Inglewood, 2:00pm.

38km CLUB Handicap- Newbridge

The 38km. Club Handicap was held at Newbridge. The course headed north to Bridgewater, back South through Arnold and Llanelly, then back to Newbridge. The field, of thirty-two riders, was divided into eight bunches, with the two man Scratch giving ;1.5min, 3min, 5min, 8min, 13min, 16min, with the three Limit riders off 20minutes. The riders were looking forward to the outward leg, with a strong tail wind in their favour, however the leg to Llanelly was to prove a test of their endurance.

Limit got off to a good start, however the 16minute bunch of N. Hinton, S. Bright, K. McCredden,
P. O'Brien, and R.Ogilvie following, were really working well together, catching Limit at the twenty-one kilometre mark. It was not too much later that the 13minute bunch pulled in this combined bunch at the twenty-four kilometre mark. Scratch and second Scratch, with three riders, were pushing hard, but failing to catch anyone in front. The three minute bunch of M.Rankin, R.lovell, S. Thompson, B. Fisher, N. Knight were really powering along, catching the 5minute bunch just before Arnold. However the 8 minute bunch, did not seem to notice the head wind after Bridgewater, catching the three bunch combination at Arnold. The rail crossing at Llanelly, caught a number of riders out, causing them to lose the wheel. This bunch, of about twenty riders, pushed ahead, with the 8minute bunch starting the push, with four kilometres to the finish, the other riders finding it difficult to hang on.

In a tremendous finish, Fran Medina [8m], in a time of 1h. 1m. 8secs., an average of 37.5 kmh., held off Graham Lockwood [8m], in a strongly contested sprint, taking the honours. Followed by S. Auld [8m], M. Lavery [8m], R. Colwell [8m], K. Lacey [13m], and seventh P. O' Brien [16m].

Fastest time: Geoff. Bennett [1.5], 57min.10 seconds, an average of 40kmh.

47km DECKED OUT COACHING Handicap- Newbridge

The 47 Kilometre, Decked Out Coaching Handicap, had a change of Venue, with the start and finish to be at Newbridge. The riders were familiar with the two lap loop, South to Laanecoorie, the back down the highway to Newbridge, the two laps totalling forty-five kilometres. The field, of thirty-two riders, was divided into six bunches, with Scratch conceding 3min.,6min., 10min., 15min., and the four rider Limit group at 20minutes.

Limit got off to a good start, losing one rider just after Laanecoorie The bunches were all performing well, with no apparent “Hot” favourite emerging during the first lap, although, at the half way mark, the spread of riders was reduced from twenty minutes, with Scratch going through the first lap, only seven and a half minutes behind Limit. There was some changes becoming apparent, with the fifteen minute bunch, of G.Chapman, J.Trickey, S. Smythe, D. Jane, and E. Keetlar, pulling in Limit at the turn to Laanecoorie. Meanwhile the six minute bunch had caught the ten minute bunch at Laanecoorie, and following through, picked up the fifteen minute bunch, about five kilometres from the finish. The Scratch bunch of B. Jane, J. Mollison, G. Bennett, T. Jones, and A. Pascoe, having maintained a fierce pace, finally pulled in the three minute bunch with about ten kilometres to go. This ten rider bunch was pushing to catch the large bunch of seventeen riders between it and the finish. However it was not until the bridge at Newbridge the bunches came together, turning sharply on to the last five hundred metres stretch to the finish.

The referees on the finish line, were ready for a scramble, as the bunch of twenty-six riders headed for them at about fifty-five kph. It was Justin Mollison [Sc], with a great turn of speed, pushed ahead of Paul Dynon, to finish in first place, in a time of 1hr. 5min.35sec., an average of 41.3kmh. Second P. 52km CLUB ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS - Newbridge

The Club's Road Championships was held at Newbridge, over a two lap 52km. Course. Considering that a large contingent of Club riders were riding the following day at Learmonth, in an State Open Event, the entry of thirty-six riders was excellent. The course headed west through Tarnagulla, cutting across towards Laanecoorie, then cutting back east to Newbridge, then the same again to complete the 52 Kilometre course. It was to be a “Classic” race, with many regrets at the finish.

The thirty-six riders took off, but as they were settling in, Darryl Stewart took off, surprising the bunch, with Paul Volk jumping the gap, and the pair working together. The odds were that the thirty-four riders could pull the two riders breakaway in without too much trouble, but that wasn't to be, with D. Stewart and P. Volk building a two minute gap at the finish of the first lap. It seemed that the main bunch were concentrating on the riders around them, instead of the two riders in the breakaway. Despite the efforts of Glen Farrow, Carl Harris, Geoff. Bennett and Shane Thomson, trying to make breakaways, at different times, to encourage an increase in speed, it was to no avail.

In the last kilometre of the race it was still Stewart and Volk, with a bunch of riders closing in. However it was Paul Volk who had something left, opening up a considerable gap, finishing a clear winner by fifty metres, in a time of 1h 21 m 41s, an average of 38.2kmh., with Darryl Stewart, holding off Terry Schintler and Paul Dalton to finish in second place. The women's event, running concurrently, with the men's, was won by Leigh-Anne Dynon. The Scratch race conducted for those not in the Championship Event, was won by Rick Mitchell, followed by Ross Oglvie and Gerrard O' Halloran.

President Murray Rankin presented Paul Volk and Leigh Anne Dynon with their 2011, Club Chapion Sash, at a special afternoon tea.

Next Week 17th. September, 2:00pm, The 47km. Decked Out Coaching Handicap at Woodstock.

50km PETER BAKER & ASSOCIATES Handicap - Woodstock

The Central Victorian Veteran's Cycling Club conducted its September feature race, the Peter Baker and Associates Handicap, in bright sunshine and a ferocious wind on Saturday. The 50 kilometre course started at Woodstock and took in Newbridge and Laanecoorie before travelling along the Maryborough Road and over Deer Farm Hill back to the hall. The strong field of 45 was boosted by the return of several riders coming off a winter hibernation. A six-rider scratch group gave starts of 3, 6, 9, 13, 16 and 20 minutes, with two limit riders having the benefit of a 28 minute start.

The race got off to a furious start as riders took advantage of a cross tail-wind which saw the scratch bunch hitting speeds of 60 km/h on the way to Newbridge. The run south to Laanecoorie was also wind assisted but when the race turned left into the wind, speeds dropped dramatically as riders went off the back of every bunch, and a process ion of lone figures stretched along the Maryborough Road. The combined 13 and sixteen minute bunches reaped the benefit of numbers as they gobbled up everyone in front of them and turned into the Woodstock - Newbridge Road with a big advantage. Behind them scratch was still trailing second scratch, but third scratch caught the remains of the 9 minute bunch and other stragglers on the corner, and with a bigger group started to eat into the advantage of the leaders.

With the finish line in sight the leading bunch found an extra gear and held off the pursuers to come in 20 seconds ahead. Terry O’Brien (13 min) won the sprint comfortably to take first place in 1 hour 24 minutes 50 seconds at an average speed of 35.6 km/hour. He was followed home by Andrew Berry (13 min) in second, Steve Auld (13 min) in third, David Hare (13 min) 4th, Graeme Lockwood (16 min) 5th, Ken Hamilton (16 min) 6th, Fran Medina (13 min) 7th, Jenny Farrow (13 min) 8th, Paul Dalton (6 min) 9th and Russ Gilbey (6 min) 10th.

Trevor Watchman claimed fastest time in his comeback race in 1 hour 13 minutes 20 seconds at an average speed of 41.3 km/hour.

Next week will be the club championships over 52 kilometres at Newbridge with supporting scratch races. Corner Stewards are Anthony Favaloro, Geoff Higginbotham, Andrew Joiner, Maurie Kennedy and Bernie Leahy.

47km Handicap - Woodstock

The field for the 47km Club Handicap at Woodstock, was down on entries, with a number of members riding in the “Open” event in Gippsland. There were thirty-six riders divided into eight bunches, with the two Scratch riders giving the bunches; 1-3-5-9-14-20-and 24 minutes.

The home course took the riders from Woodstock, over to Newbridge, swinging South to Laanecoorie, then back down the Maldon Road to Newbridge, then turning into the last twelve kilometres to the finish line at Newbridge. The two Limit riders headed off with Rick Mitchell, after a long lay off leading out. The two rider Scratch bunch had it all to do, with agroup of seven riders one minute ahead of them. However Scratch was unable to catch the fast moving bunch ahead of it. The One minute bunch was in a similar situation, unable to catch the three minute bunch in front of it. It was, in fact the three minute bunch of M. Balnaves, P. Stuckenschmidt, M. Sait, N. Knight, N. Blakeley, and D. Hare that were the pace makers in this race, very quickly pulling in the five minute bunh at Newbridge, just thirteen kilometres into the race. This combined bunch continued chasing, however the nine minute bunch was really putting it together, catching the fourteen and twenty minute bunches, just outside Newbridge, leaving only Limit in front. Meanwhile the two Limit riders had continued to ride well, it was not until four kilometres from the finish, that the combined bunch caught them, the riders still pushing, aware that they were in with a chance of winning. It was , new rider. Dean Goodwin, who made the first move, on the rise of the last hill, less than a kilometre from the finish.

Jim Field, Trevor McDougall, and Pam Robertson took up the challenge, and it was Pam Robertson [9m], in a time of 1h 17m 20s. an average of 36.5kmh, with a great turn of speed, won clearly by about fifty metres. Second J. Field [9m], followed by, D. Goodwin [14m], T. McDougall [9m], A. Berry [9m], and G. Lockwood [9m].

Fastest Time J. Mollison [Sc] 1h 11m, an average of 37.2kmh.

Next Race: Saturday 3rd. September, Peter Baker & Associates Feature, 50km. At Woodstock

65km DANNY CLAPP Handicap - Newbridge

The forty riders who entered for the Danny Clapp 65km. Handicap at Newbridge, new that it would be a battle to maintain top speeds over this hilly course. The course headed due south from Newbridge to Tarnagulla, swinging east over the twelve kilometres of hills to Moliagul, south back to Dunolly, then back north to Tarnagulla, and straight through to the finish at Newbridge.
The field was divided into eight bunches at 4, 7, 13, 17, 21, 25, 32 minutes.

The three riders in the Limit bunch headed off , with Peter O'Brien setting the pace, and leading from the front. The six riders in Scratch looked pretty strong, but it was not until about ten kilometres from the finish that the four minute bunch was pulled in.The seven minute bunch of N. Blakely, M. Balnaves, T. Noonan,A Hayhow, D. Hare, and P. Stuckenschmidt, were really performing, and making inroads on the thirteen minute bunch, finally catching it at Tarnagulla, on the way back. Then just after Tarnagulla picking up the seventeen minute bunch. Meanwhile the twenty minute bunch of A. O'Brien, T. de Vries, S. Bright and E. Keetlaar, picked up the twenty-five minute bunch on the Moliagul/ Dunolly Road. This combined bunch of eight riders, finally caught the Limit bunch on the homeward side of Tarnagulla, however it was the rampant seven minute bunch, taking everything before it, with their combined bunch numbering sixteen riders, that caught the three remaining groups in front of them, about six kilometres from the finish.

It was therefore a bunch of about thirty riders that headed for the finish at Newbridge. In a great effort, Andy Hayhow [7m], in his first win, just pushed ahead of Tim Noonan [7m], in a time of 1h 39m 32s, an average of 37.7kmh, followed by, P. Pontell [17m], T. Mc Dougall [17m], N. 60km BOLTON'S OFFICE NATIONAL Handicap - Woodstock

The 60 Km. Bolton's Office National Handicap at Woodstock, is recognised as one of the more “Testing” races of the Winter season. Not withstanding, there were forty-one riders faced up to the
start. The course starting at Woodstock, headed down Power's Road, swung back to Newbridge, back South, through Laanecoorie to the Maryborough Road, and headed East to the turn off, back the six kilometres, to the finish at Woodstock. The field was divided into eight bunches, with time gaps of 4, 8, 13, 17, 20, 29, and the two Limit riders on 37 minutes. The start saw Gary Saunders with a “Liquid” problem, causing him to miss the start, leaving Dave Keith to head off on his own.

The seven riders in the four minute bunch were working well together, catching the eight minute group at the thirty-eight kilometre mark.Meanwhile the thirteen minute bunch picked up the seventeen minute riders at the thirty-five kilometre mark. The seven riders in the Scratch bunch, were performing smoothly, but did not seem to be making much of a “Dent” in the field. The long, two and a half kilometre climb of Deer Farm Hill took it's toll on the riders, causing a number to drop off on the long drag. Meanwhile, Limit riders Saunders and Keith were still out in front, with every other bunch pushing hard to pull them in. It was not until about six kilometres from the finish, that the combined 4, 8 and 13minute bunch caught up with the rest of the field, where minutes before, the 20minute bunch pulled in the 29 minute bunch. This bunch, now increased to about thirty riders, with the inclusion of Scratch, were still chasing the sole Limit rider, who was tiring quickly. It was not until inside the last kilometre that he was caught, and shortly after Scratch riders J. Mollison and A. Pascoe made their move. Easing up the outside of the bunch, placing themselves for the run in to the finish.

However the ever watchful Rick McIntosh [4m] was ready for it, and with a great turn of speed, finished first, in a time of 1h 30m 39s. An average of 39.7kmh. Followed by, J. Mollison [Sc], A.Pascoe [Sc], R. Gilbey [Sc], B. Jane [Sc], T. Schintler [4m], T. West [Sc], M. Rankin [4m], C.Chambers [8m], and in G. Lockwood [17m]

52km PRESIDENTS Handicap - Newbridge

The thirty-one riders who fronted up for The President's 52km. Handicap, at Newbridge, were greeted with heavy rain, and a wind that would cause some suffering on the Tarnagulla/Laanecoorie Road leg. The course headed off, up the hills, west to Tarnagulla, then turning back down the Laanecoorie Road, before swinging back north to Newbridge, then another lap of the same. The handicapper divided the field into seven bunches, at 3, 7, 10, 12, 18, and 26 minutes respectively.

The sole Limit rider led off into heavy rain, with the next bunch eight minutes behind. The eight rider scratch bunch started off smoothly, with all riders working well together. The three minute bunch caught the seven minute bunch at Tarnagulla, but lost Brett Williams, who was “Punctured” out of the race. It was about the same spot, on the second lap, that Scratch pulled in both bunches, combining into a fast moving bunch of seventeen riders. The Limit rider still led the field into the second lap, and it wasn't until Tarnagulla, that chasing eight minute rider, Tom de Vries, caught him, and went on to lead the field. Shortly after the turn onto he Laanecoorie Road, the Peleton, made up of the remains of three bunches, passed the Limit rider, leaving only one rider in front, who in turn was caught about ten kilometres from the finish. It was on the last leg to the finish, that Russell Gilbey, and Murray Rankin made separate attempts to break-away, but to no avail. This large bunch continued to push and going to the line there was still fifteen riders in with a chance.

However three hundred metres out, Andrew Joiner [Scr], broke away, winning by a good margin, in a time of 1h 22m 33s, an average of 38.4kmh. 2nd. R. Gilbey [Scr], 3rd. G. Farrow [Scr], 4th. 48km STEWARTS ACCOUNTANTS Handicap - Laancoorie

The thirty- nine riders who lined up for the Stewarts Accountants 48km. Handicap at Laanecoorie, were looking forward to a relatively easy ride, no wind and the sun shining, and the course, free of hills. The course starting at Laanecoorie headed up to the Maryborough Road, cutting back on the Maldon Road, then back into Laanecoorie, six laps of this 8km. circuit. The handicapper divided the field into eight bunches, at 2, 4, 6 , 9, 11, 15, and 22minutes respectively.

The two Limit riders headed out, easing into a steady rhythm maintaining the seven minute gap for the first lap, however the 15minute bunch, of J. Trickey, P. Pontell, T. De Vries, and G. Lockwood, having lost a rider early on, were really burning the road up, catching Limit at the 21km. Mark. The Scratch bunch were pushing from the word go, but it was not until the fifth lap that they caught the two minute bunch, and finally finished together. The six minute bunch of P. Dalton, B. Williams, M. Lavery, N. Knight, D. Hare and M. Balnaves, was the only bunch making headway, catching the nine minute bunch[ which had combined with the eleven minute bunch earlier] after the start of the fourth lap. The “Valiant” four of the fifteen minute bunch, were finally caught, just two kilometres from the finish.

The six minute bunch, still riding strongly, led out winner Paul Dalton [6m] , in a time of 1h-18m-59s, an average of 36.5 kmh., followed by N. Knight [6m], J.Field [9m], D. Hare [6m], J. Farrow [11m], C. Chambers [9m], P. Robertson [11m], S. Dalavedova [9m], T. DeVries [15m], and in tenth place T. O'Brien [9m].

The fastest time went to, Swan Hill rider, in his second race with the club.
Gaethan Cutri, in a time of 1h-14m-17s, an average of 38.9kmh.

First unplaced female W. Bennett.

The good handicapping was evidenced by the whole field finishing within a forty-five second time frame.

52km NANGA GNULLE BENDIGO Handicap - Emu Creek

The forty-two riders who lined up for The Nanga Gnulle Bendigo 52 Km. Handicap, at Emu Creek, were greeted with bright sunshine, albeit, along with a gusty wind. The course was considered to be on the “Trying” side, heading up Storey's Road, swinging south towards Sutton Grange, then, back along Axe Creek Road, to the Exchange, a left up the hill, and back to Storey's Road. Then just to make it interesting, the same again, finally finishing at the Emu Creek Tennis Courts. The field was divided into nine bunches, at 3min, 5min., 7min., 9min., 12min., 14min., 20min., and the Limit rider a generous thirty minutes.

Limit led off into a bracing wind, followed by the trio in the twenty minute bunch, as the back bunches began their push, it became evident that, D. Barri, G. Farrow, B. Williams, R. Lovell, M. Rankin, C. Halliday, and A. Favaloro, making up the five minute bunch, was the “In form” riders, catching the seven minute bunch, just before the end of the first lap,and soon after, on Storey's Road, pulling in the nine minute bunch, the combined bunch was enlarged by the riders who were capable of holding on, and in some cases, able to work with the bunch. The three Scratch riders had got off to a good start, catching the three minute bunch just at the bottom of the “Goose- neck” on the second lap, however this was foiled by a herd of cows, changing paddocks at the top of the “Goose-neck” , virtually spoiling any chance that they may have had. The Limit rider had continued to hold off the others until the thirty-nine km. mark, when the twenty minute bunch pulled him in just before the turn into Axe Creek Road, the four riders kept pushing, but the five minute bunch had gathered in all in front of it, and swept passed Limit and second Limit bunches, with nothing in front of them, except the finish line, which was about ten kilometres ahead. The finish was going to be strongly contested, with about fifteen riders trying to position themselves into the best position for the sprint.

Glen Farrow had a perfect position going round the last corner, led out by Paul Dynon, winning comfortably in the end. Murray Rankin just edging out Mick Lavery for second place.

First G.Farrow, [5m], in a time of 1h 20m 38secs., average of 38.7 kmh., followed by M. Rankin, [5m] M. Lavery [7m], D. Barri, [5m], P. Bone, [7m], R. Verkulyn, [9m], R. Lovell, [5m], S.Thompson, [7m], D. Hare, [9m], A. Favaloro. [5m]

52km PHIL SAWYER Handicap - Woodstock

The thirty-eight riders who lined up for the start of the 59km. Phil Sawyer Handicap at Woodstock, were immediately aware that it was going to be a very cold, windy race. The course took the riders North to Newbridge continuing up over the long drag to Llanelly, dog- legging through Llanelly, then, in a big circuit back via Tarnagulla, Newbridge, to the finish at Woodstock.
The handicapper divided the Field into eight bunches, with the five rider Scratch, giving the others, 4; 7; 10; 14; 18; 25; and 30 minutes respectively. Limit got off to a rough start, with Dave Keith
fading quickly, leaving Dave Collier to battle the elements on his own.

Scratch, with the biggest bunch it's had for a while, started like a well oiled machine, with every rider fitting in to the rhythm, allowing them to maintain a fast pace. Scratch caught the four minute bunch, about thirty kilometres into the race, and about five km. later, pulled in the seven minute bunch. M. Rankin, R. Lovell, M. Lavery, N. Blakely, and P. Stuckenschmidt, made up the ten minute bunch, and after a strong start, caught the fourteen minute bunch at Newbridge on the return leg, making the combined bunch up to twelve riders. Meanwhile the eighteen minute bunch, comprising of, T. O'Brien, J. Farrow, F. Medina, W. Bennett and T. McDougall, had caught the twenty-five minute bunch about the half-way mark, and was continuing to ride strongly.

Scratch had continued it's push, catching the fourteen minute bunch a kilometre from the finish, and with about 400 hundred metres to go, got on to the back of the eighteen minute bunch, however the day belonged to Dave Collier, his first ride back after a lengthy absence, and virtually riding the total distance on his own, had his first win, after an absolutely brilliant ride.

First D. Collier [30m], 1h.51 m.16sec., an average of 31.9kmh., followed by, F. Medina [18m], J. Farrow [18m], T. McDougall [18m], J. Trickey [25m], T. O'Brien [18m], J. Mollison [Scr.],T. Fitzpatrick [Scr.], G. Cutri [4m], and in tenth place, T. Store [Scr.].

52km WADDINGTON Handicap - Castlemaine

The Kel Waddington 52km. Handicap at Castlemaine lived up to it's reputation of being one of the most testing rides of the season. The field was smaller than usual, with a number of Club members riding at Benalla, and quite a number on the sick list, with entries down to thirty riders. The course headed west towards Muckleford, immediately attacking the Fromes Road hill, steep and about 1km. Long. Then north towards Walmer, on to the Maldon/Fogarty's Gap Road, swinging back towards Lockwood at the 20km. Mark, around the “Nuggeties” to the Eddington Road, up to Maldon, then heading back, following the road back to Fogarty's Gap Road, then back to Castlemaine. Handicapper Carl Phillips had his work cut out to balance the field, deciding on seven groups, with Scratch giving the other bunches 2; 5; 8; 11; 20; and 25minutes respectively.

The two Limit riders started well, holding off the chasing second limit until the 15km. Mark, and managing to hold on,[For a While], until the pace proved too much. The second limit bunch certainly looked the ones to beat as the three riders left pushed towards the finish. The five minute bunch, with six riders started very well, catching the five and eight minute bunches at Maldon, then pulling in the eleven minute bunch shortly afterwards. The three Scratch riders started off as if they meant business, but unfortunately Justin Mollison punctured at the20km.mark, and although he managed to finish the race, too much time was lost. The remaining two Scratch riders, Tony Jones and Cate Fraser were, perhaps, the first husband and wife, to ride together as competitors in the Scratch Bunch. The five minute bunch was still chasing the front runners, and losing many riders on the way.

It was not until about one kilometre from the finish, that they finally caught the leading bunch of Steve Bright, Greg Chapman and Tom DeVries It was a large bunch of riders heading to the finish, however Daryl Stewart [5m] jumped out about 200metres from the line, winning by some thirty metres, in a time of 1hr. 26m. 07Sec. Average of 36.3 kmph., followed by S.Muller [5m], S.Wall [5m], C.Banfield [5m], S. Auld [11m], R.Verkulyn [11m], C. Davidge [8m], M.Lavery [8m], G.Chapman [20m], and in tenth place, T. 55km PAUL VOLK ELECTRICAL Handicap - Maryborough

The forty riders who contested The Paul Volk Electrical 55 kilometre handicap at Maryborough, were met with blue skies, but a strong blustery wind, one that would be detrimental on the open stretches of the course. Aileen O'Brien, the acting Handicapper, divided the field into eight bunches, with Scratch giving the other bunches 1.5; 4; 7; 9; 12; 17; and Limit 22 minutes respectively. The course headed North from Maryborough, into a strong head wind towards Dunolly, due West to Mount Hooghly, then back South through Timor West, and back to the finish at Maryborough.

The four riders in Limit were intent on making their presence felt, and started strongly, making good use of the downhill start. The Scratch bunch of Justin Mollison and Tony Jones knew they were, having only two riders, in for a battle to catch the bunches in front of them, however about the 25km. mark they caught the 4minute bunch, and continued the chase, but did not manage to catch any others. At this stage the rest of the field was maintaining their positions. However this changed with the constant pressure of the five riders in the seven minute bunch starting to pay of. Peter Ladd's strong push from the start had inspired the others, and they had caught the nine minute bunch, about twelve kilometres into the race, continuing to overtake riders that had dropped off other bunches. Meanwhile at the front of the race, Steve Bright had broken away from Limit, and was fighting a lone battle at the front, while not far behind the seven minute bunch had overtaken the 12 and 17minute bunches, and was pushing for the finish line, finally catching S. Bright about a kilometre from home.

In the uphill sprint to the line, Craig Halliday [7m] , in a time of Ih. 21m. 42s., an average of 40.5 kph, just beat Mick Lavery [7m]in second place, followed by T. McDougall [17m], R. Verkulyn [9m], K. Lacey [17m], R. Colwell [7m],S. Bright [22m], T. O'Brien [12m], M. Rankin [4m], and in 10th. Place, R. Lovell [4m]

56km PETER BAKER & ASSOCIATES Handicap - Newbridge

The Central Victorian Veteran's Cycling Club’s June Feature Race sponsored by Peter Baker and Associates attracted a small field of 35 riders in the depths of winter to take on a tough 56 km course on Saturday. The route had to be changed from the original Woodstock circuit to Newbridge, with riders heading through Tarnagulla, up the testing Mt Moliagul climb and then down the middle road to Llanelly for the run home. A scratch bunch of six riders gave starts of 2 ½, 5, 10 and 14 minutes to similar sized groups, with three limit markers enjoying a 23 minute advantage.

The first half of the race was brutal as riders pushed into a head wind as they fought up the hills to Tarnagulla, resulting in every bunch shedding riders early on, several opting for a u-turn and the short way home. More damage was done up Mt Moliagul, and by the time scratch and second scratch caught third at the 35 kilometre mark only half the original starters remained. From then on it was only a question of how long before the rest of the field was run down as the big group rolled on relentlessly, picking up and then spitting out rider after rider. The rest of the field was covered ten kilometres from home and the last climb out of Llanelly trimmed numbers even more.

The fast downhill finish proved to be a thriller as Justin Mollison squeezed out Barry Jane (2 ½ minutes) to take out first and fastest off scratch. They were followed home by Shane Thompson (2 ½ minutes), Andrew Joiner (scratch), Brett Williams (5 minutes), Geoff Bennett (scratch), Shane Standfield (5 minutes), Daniel Barri (2 ½ minutes) and Murray Rankin (5 minutes), with Richard Verkuylen (10 minutes) the last survivor of the bunch in 10th place.

Next week’s race is the Paul Volk Handicap starting at the Maryborough Gun Club on Timor Road. Please note that parking will be tight as the gun club is running a competition at the same time, and we will also be using a different venue for afternoon tea (details when you get there).

57km RADIO SPORT NATIONAL Handicap - Bagshot

Radio Sport National sponsored the annual outing to Bagshot for the Central Victorian Veteran's Cycling Club’s 57 kilometre event on Saturday. The undulating course starts at Bagshot Hall then heads towards Goornong with a few kilometres along the Midland Highway before turning north up the May Reef Road and then left at the Raywood Elmore Road. Another left turn takes the riders through the rolling hills of Kamarooka Forest back to Bagshot for a nerve-wracking finish at the hall on a narrow road. Fifty-one riders took up the challenge in perfect conditions. The handicapper opted for seven evenly-sized groups of about seven riders plus two limit markers with a 29 minute start on scratch.

The bunches had a favourable wind for the first half of the race, but the rumble strips at the level crossing coming on to the Midland Highway took a heavy toll with drink bottles flying everywhere and the odd mechanical part letting go. It wasn’t until the second half of the race that fractures started to appear in the bunches as a steady stream of riders lost contact. Second scratch were holding off scratch and over-hauled third scratch with 20 kilometres to go. The combined bunch picked up stragglers through the Kamarooka hills before overhauling most of the rest of the field at the final turn onto the Old Murray Road three kilometres from the finish.

Riders in the thirty-plus strong peloton started manoeuvring for the sprint, not realising that the two intrepid limit markers, Steve Bright and newcomer Trevor McDougall, had stayed clear of the whole field and were well up the road. Trevor (29 min) showed the benefit of many long rides around Tarnagulla to win comfortably from Steve (29 min) with the rampaging pack still several minutes further back. Terry Schintler (2 min) won the bunch sprint to take out third place ahead of Martin Banfield (2 min), Bruce Baldwin (6 ½ min), Daniel Barri ( 4 ½ min), Glen Farrow (2 min), Shane Thompson (2 min), Mick Sait (9 min) and Craig Banfield (6 ½ min).

Fastest time went to Justin Mollison and Cait Fraser was first unplaced lady.

There is no racing on the long weekend. Please note the race on June 18 will start at Newbridge instead of Woodstock as previously advertised.

Graded Criterium - Mayfair Park

The tight 900 metre circuit at Mayfair Park was the venue for the Central Victorian Veteran’s Cycling Club’s graded criteriums on Saturday. Fine but overcast conditions and a light wind enticed 48 riders on to the course to contest four grades. C and D grades raced for 30 minutes plus three laps while A and B grades stuck it out for 45 minutes plus three laps.

D Grade saw new member Trevor McDougall get away early but he was pegged back after a few laps, and steady attrition of the bunch saw just two riders together for the sprint to the finish. Jack Trickey showed he’s lost none of his speed or guile to take first place from a gallant Wendy Bennett, with Di Jane home in third place.

C Grade turned out to be another great race after a pedestrian start with a number of riders trying to get off the front, but always to no avail as the chasing pack brought them back. The final sprint was won convincingly by Jim Field from Ken Hamilton in second place and Peter Kennedy in third.

B Grade followed a similar pattern to the earlier races as Shane Wall, Craig Halliday, Paul Stuckenschmidt, Anthony Favaloro, Howard Hall and several others all had a dig off the front, but none could get more than fifty or a hundred metres clear. Coming into the last two laps Craig Halliday had another try at getting away but was reeled in with three hundred metres to go. Shane Wall led home the sprint for a well-deserved win after a strong ride, followed by Murray Rankin second and James Thompson close behind in third.

The A grade race was a cracker as the even field chased down every break. David Stokes got off the front early for a couple of laps with Glenn Farrow, Arnie Lindsay, Andrew Joiner and several others also giving it a shot, but the field was virtually intact once again with three laps to go. Russell Gilbey had one final try at getting away and opened a up a good break going into the last lap, but he was overpowered by the bunch in the final few hundred metres. The lightning-fast down-hill finish suited Justine Leske who took out the event with a convincing win over new member Andrew Joiner who has come from nowhere in the last few weeks, beating Tony Jones home by a whisker to take second.

Next week’s race is a 57 kilometre race sponsored by Sport 927 starting and finishing at the Bagshot Hall. Corner stewards are Dave Fulton, Craig Halliday, Ash Harding, David Hare and Peter Harper.

35km Handicap - Woodstock

The Central Victorian Veteran Cycling Club returned to Woodstock on Saturday in fine conditions for a 35 kilometre dash around the Powers Road circuit. Several riders returning after a break bolstered the number of starters to forty-three. The two-man scratch bunch faced a tough day with seven groups of five to seven riders at a minute or minute-and-a-half intervals in front of them, the three limit riders heading off with a 15 minute start.

The four minute bunch, taking maximum advantage of favourable winds on the Wimmera Highway leg of the race, swallowed up the five and a half minute bunch half way to Newbridge, and with over a dozen riders working, the combined group made steady headway into bridging the gaps in front of them. The scratch, one minute and two and a half minute bunches couldn’t get together, and the weight of numbers of the big group in front proved to be the difference as all riders battled a cross head-wind on the run back from Newbridge to Woodstock.

Any notions of a big bunch sprint finish were squashed on the last rise a kilometre from the finish when new member Andrew Joiner (4 min) jumped away and registered an impressive first victory, winning by a big margin in 53 minutes 1 second from Chris Draper (5 ½ min) in second and Jim Field (7 ½ min) third. They were followed home by Gary Leech (7 ½ min), Noel Knight (4 min) Richard Verkuylen (5 ½ min) and Steve Auld (7 ½ min).

Justin Mollison recorded fastest time of 51 minutes 42 seconds.

Next week’s races are graded criteriums at Mayfair Park. Please note that all riders must register by 1:45 p.m.

61km STEWARTS ACCOUNTANTS Handicap

The Central Victorian Veteran’s Cycling Club contested the 61 kilometre May feature race at Newbridge on Saturday with 27 riders fronting up for the Stewart’s Accounting sponsored event. The small field was due to a number of riders racing in the Australian Veteran’s Championships in Adelaide and others competing in the Bendigo Club Race the following day.

Blustery conditions and small bunches were always going to be major factors as the riders headed out through Llanelly on the Llanelly-Rheola Road before turning left for the ride up Mt. Moliagul and then heading back to Newbridge through Tarnagulla. Lone limit rider Steve Bright took advantage of the tail wind over the first fifteen kilometres to hold the chasing groups at bay and was still clear over Mt. Moliagul with a two minute gap to Fran Medina and Eve Keetelar who were working hard to bridge the gap.

By this stage most of the bunches had lost riders and the cross winds were making life difficult. Steve led the field into Tarnagulla but was only about a minute clear of the chasing bunch which now consisted of the remainders of the seven, nine, 12 and 18 minute groups. The scratch riders were pushing hard and looked like they had a show after gathering in the rest of the field, but the downhill run into Newbridge and favourable winds gave the leaders the edge they needed to stay away.

Ricky Lovell (7 minutes) took the sprint in fine fashion from Jim Field (12 min) and Mick Lavery (7 min) to win in a time of 1 hour 31 minutes 8 seconds. They were followed home by Ken Hamilton (12 min) 4th , Andrew Berry (12 min) 5th, Fran Medina (18 min) 6th, Eve Keetelar (18 min) 7th, Steve Auld (9 min) 8th and Paul Stuckenschmidt (7 min) 9th. Steve Bright (28 min)hung on gallantly to take 10th.

Andrew Pascoe took fastest time of 1 hour 24 minutes 31 seconds off scratch to finish less than thirty seconds behind the winner.

Next week’s race is a 35 kilometre handicap at Woodstock followed by a general meeting. Corner stewards are Paul Dynon, Jenny Farrow, Tim Fraser, Geoff Graham and Sheridan Hall.

64km PETER HALL PAINTING Handicap

The fifty-three riders for The Peter Hall Painting 64 km. Handicap, faced a cold blustery day, over some hilly terrain in Central Victoria. The handicapper divided the field into eight groups, with the two Limit riders 26minutes ahead of Scratch, with the others on 2, 4, 6, 9, 13,16, and 20minutes respectively. Referee and Starter, Hugh Weeks gathered the field together, giving a brief resume of the course. The course headed for Inglewood, then due west over the 10 kilometres of rolling hills [Mostly uphill] to Kingower and Rheola, a sharp turn east to LLanelly, continue to Newbridge, then back north to the finish at Bridgewater.

The two Limit riders got off to a good start, with Steve Bright setting the pace. Second Limit, 6minutes behind settled down quickly, and immediately gave chase. The majority of bunches had seven to eight riders, so Scratch, with only the three hardies, Justin Mollison, Andrew Pascoe and Travis Storer, knew they had their work cut out to make any headway. The trio manage to pull second scratch in at the Rheola turn-off, but from there it was a hard run to the finish. Meanwhile the two Limit riders were holding the lead, and becoming a bit hopeful as they continued in the lead, like all good things,

At the forty kilometre mark they were overtaken by about twenty riders, a combination of the13, 16, and 20 minute groups, using their numbers to set a brisk pace. It was shortly after this that the riders experienced some of the damage the floods had caused, virtually stopping
to allow safe passage over the erosion, and deep cracks in the road, causing Neil Blakely and Daniel Barri, in one of the later groups, to have “Blowouts” putting a finish to their race. The
real move had started near the back of the field, with the 4minute bunch catching the 6minute bunch at Kingower, followed by the 9minute bunch at Rheola.

This group of twenty-two riders powered on, but as with the other bunches the rolling hills took their toll, with a number of riders dropping off.The remaining riders continued the push to the finish, catching the front markers fairly close to the finish, with Paul Dynon [4m] taking the honours in front of Rick Mcntosh,[4m] followed by S. Anstee[4m], N. Jeffs [6m], N. Knight [9m], S. Wall[4m], R. Lovell [6m], R. McCredden [9m], R. Verkulyn [9m], and in 10th. place, B. Williams [4m].

35km Handicap - Woodstock

Thirty-two riders faced the starter at Woodstock on Saturday in absolutely perfect conditions for the Central Victorian Veteran’s Cycling Club’s 35 kilometre handicap event over the hot-dog course. The handicapper decided on small bunches and time differences which saw the two scratch riders Andrew Pascoe and Justin Mollison chasing groups of four riders at 1 ½ , 2 ½, 4 and 6 minutes. Bigger bunches had eight and eleven minutes start and the three limit riders were off 16 minutes.

At the first turnaround near Newbridge, the only significant move was second scratch group catching third scratch and holding onto a one minute lead over scratch. Back past the clubrooms, the surviving limit markers Alan Sandford and Pat Pontell maintained a healthy two minute lead over the chasing bunches which had started to shed riders, and the four and six minute bunches had come together. All the gaps had narrowed by the final turnaround near Maryborough Road except the limit riders who still had a minute break, and the scratch riders who were still a minute off the back of the main field.

The rolling hills over the last few kilometres meant that the whole field was in sight, giving the scratch bunch and other chasing riders tantalising glimpses of the two leaders who rounded the bend into the home straight well clear. They couldn’t afford to relax though, as the chasing bunch driven by second scratch riders came into sight a few seconds later and were closing in on the leaders at a rapid rate. The two worked right to the line with Alan Sandford (16 min) taking the win in 1:6:17 from Pat Pontell (16 min), only a matter of fifteen seconds in front of David Bakes (1 ½ ) who took third place ahead of David Stokes (2 ½) Ray Colwell (4) and Neil Jeffs (4). First unplaced lady was Aileen O’Brien and Justin Mollison took out fastest time in 51:15, less than a minute behind the winners.

Next week’s race is a 58 kilometre handicap at Bridgewater sponsored by Peter Hall Painting. Corner stewards are Paul Dalton, Chris Davidge, Tom De Vries, Shane Dellavedova and Chris Draper.

Central vet winners were Leigh- Anne Dynon (W 35/39) Tony Fitzpatrick (M45/49). Silvers went to Fran Medina (W40/44), Justin Mollison (M50/54), and Bronze went to Jack Trickey (M75/79), Jenny Farrow (W40/44), ( Aileen O’Brien (W50/54).

One hundred and thirty two riders took to the road on Monday, for the Cec Cripps Handicap. Participants were grouped into 13 bunches. Mild conditions with little wind produced fast times and made it difficult for the back markers to make up the time.
The course took riders out to Dunolly across to Rathscar then back to Maryborough The ten minute group caught all those in front of them by about 7 klm from home and as the riders turned into Gladstone St the pace increased. The bunch at this stage was made up of 40 to 50 riders. The sprint home was a dramatic affair with a fall just short of the line as riders jostled for the lead.

The eventual winner was Graham Sylverster (10 min)in a time of 1:34:38 for an average speed of 41.2 klm/hr in 2nd place was Neil Thompson (10 min), 3rd Kevin Usher (12 min), 4th Rod Heatherington ((10 min), 5th Tony Blanchflower (10 min), 6th Martin Peters (10 min), 7th Jeff Van Romans (17 min), 8th Phillip Bone (10 min),9th Bruce Baldwin (10 min)and in 10th place was Warrick Bott (14.30 min). 47km Graded Scratch Race - Woodstock

The 47km Graded Scratch at Woodstock, was down in numbers with a group of members heading to Lancefield the following day for the “Bengazhi”. Forty-three starters lined up for this popular event, the day was pleasantly warm, although the wind had increased, and at times seemed to be coming from all directions. The Handicapper divided the field into five grades, with the three top grades having ten riders and D and E grades having seven and four respectively.

A graded headed off first, with the bunch content to work together until the last 5km’s, when the pressure was increased, every rider trying to gain a position that would help in the charge for the line. T. Watchman in a time of 1h 12m 33s, an average of 39 kmph, took the honours, with J. Mollison 2nd. and T.Fraser 3rd.

The story was much the same for B Grade , with the riders staying together until the downhill approach to the finish, with S. Standfield breaking and C. Banfield following, it was s. Stanfield 1st. in a time of 1h 16m 13s, an average of 37kmph., followed by A. Joiner then J.Thompson.

It was a similar story for C Grade, with the bunch happy to stick together until the final 600 metres, with K. Hamilton powering home in a time of1h 20m 33s, an average of 35kmph.

The D Grade bunch pushed hard from the start, losing two riders at Newbridge, the remaining six riders continued to work well together, coming down to the fastest in the sprint, with I. Bishop home in 1h 27m 52s , an average of 32kmph.

The four riders in E Grade were content to work together, knowing that it would be a strong face wind on the leg from Newbridge to Laanecoorie, and it would be a case of everyone pulling their weight to maintain anything like a steady pace. P. O’ Brien made his move about five kilometres from the finish, with R. Wright catching the wheel. P. O’Brien in a time of1h 33m 56s, an average of 30 kmph, held off R. Wright 2nd. followed by D. Keith 3rd.

50km PETER BAKER & ASSOCIATES Handicap - Woodstock

The fifty-one entrants for the Peter Baker & Associates 50km. Handicap,at Woodstock, were faced with very strong, mainly, side winds. The course took the riders across to Newbridge, south to Laanecoorie, then back along the Maryborough Road , turning north for the final six kilometers back to Woodstock.

The field was divided into ten groups, with Limit starting 25 minutes ahead of Scratch, and the others at 21, 18, 13, 11, 7, 5, 3, and 1. The two Limit riders headed off in strong cross winds, finding it difficult to maintain a steady pace. The 1 minute bunch made a move early, picking up the 3 minute bunch at Laanecoorie, but failing to catch the 5 minute bunch until about 3km. from the finish. The 7minute bunch had caught the 11minute at Deer Farm hill, and then, just before the turn back to Woodstock rolled in the 13minute bunch.

One of the great performances of the race was undoubtedly the efforts of J. Trickey, W. Bennett, S. Amy and D. Jane in the 21minute bunch, after a great start, pulling in the Limit riders at Newbridge, they continued leading the field, not getting caught until about 300 metres from the finish. Meanwhile the field had bunched up, with a number of bunches combining, it was, therefore,a large bunch that sprinted for the line.

Geoff Pollard [7m] won in a time of 1h 19m 08s, an average of 38kmh., followed by D. Stewart [5m], J. Thompson [7m], G. Chapman [18m], M. Lavery [7m], G. Lockwood [11m], T. Fraser [1m], R. Gilbey [3m], R. Lovell [5m], and S. Thomson [1m]. (The number of bunches represented in the placegetters, was an indication of the good work of Handicapper, Carl Phillips).

Fastest Time J. Mollison [Scr] 1h.12m. 41s. , an average of 41kmh.

52km DANNY CLAPP Handicap - Newbridge

The fifty-seven riders who were to contest the 52km. Danny Clapp handicap at Newbridge had , in the main, good conditions, tempered with a strong wind that would test their resolve down the back straight. The field was divided into seven groups, with Limit 23minutes ahead of Scratch, and the others at; 18, 13, 10, 6, 4, and 2 minutes.

The course wended it’s way through Tarnagulla, south to Dunolly, then back north to Laanecoorie, and home to Newbridge. The Limit bunch got off to a fast start, dropping a rider in the first kilometer, maintaining a fast even pace towards Dunolly. The whole field seemed to be in an optimistic mood, with all the bunches getting off to a good start, and making it difficult for the chasing groups to catch them. Scratch found that the conditions suited them and really worked smoothly, catching second scratch after about 40 kms., and this combination pulled in third scratch, with 10 km. still to the finish. Meanwhile the 6 minute bunch was really rolling through the field, catching just about everyone, but there was the three musketeers from the 13minute bunch who had broken away from the others, and were leading the chase.

Basically the whole field came together in the last four kilometers, with Scratch finally overtaking Limit about half a kilometre from the finish, but it was to be the trio from the 13minute bunch braking away from the leaders, finishing off, what had been a great effort, with Graeme Lockwood [13m], first, in a time of 1hr.26mins. 54secs., an average of 37.5kmph., 2nd. Graded Criteriums - Mayfair Park

A smaller than usual field of thirty-nine saw the Central Victorian Veteran’s Cycling Club run three grades of criteriums at Mayfair Park on Saturday instead of the usual four as a number of club riders ventured further afield to take on the Great Otways Ride or save themselves for the Brennan Hall race at Warrnambool on Sunday. The tight circuit, longer race times and strong wind made for a tough day, not to mention the occasional bus passing though and at one stage two semis carrying portable buildings pulling up for a rest on the home straight.

A big range of ability in C Grade resulted in the field fracturing early on with no successful breaks but a string of riders going out the back over the 35 minute plus three laps journey. Six riders led the race going into the final lap but even this group didn’t stay together and Gary Leech registered a comfortable win ahead of Carl Louchard with Bruce Tonkin filling third place.

A and B grades faced up to forty-five minutes plus three laps. The B grade event saw a much more even race with many riders trying to get away but few managing to establish any sort of a break before being pulled back. The bunch was intact with a lap and a half to go when Chris Davidge tried to jump off the front. He managed to get a hundred metres clear but found the grind up the back straight into a stiff head wind too tough alone and was swept up before the turn into the home straight. Placing at the final corner proved all important when a small group got a gap and held it to the finish line where Dale Lowe held out Garry Murdoch to win with Russell Gilbey taking third spot.

The biggest field of the day faced the starter for the A grade race. It was only a matter of time before the scratch riders tried to get way and after about twenty minutes Andrew Pascoe and Justin Mollison shot clear of the pack and got out to a handy lead. Barry Jane chased valiantly by himself to get across the gap and got onto the back wheel of the leaders but couldn’t hold the pace and drifted back to the pack. From then on it was a race for third as the chasing bunch didn’t get organised despite the efforts of Chris Weatheritt, and Justin and Andrew steadily increased their lead to almost lap the field at the finish where Justin pipped Andrew at the line to take first spot. Brett Williams came out of the pack on the down-hill run to the line to grab third place.

Next week’s race is a 52 kilometre handicap at Newbridge sponsored by Danny Clapp starting at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Corner stewards are Mick Anderson, Syd Anstey, Mal Balnaves, James Thompson and Jo Wall.

65km OPPY Handicap - Rochester

The 65km. “OPPY” Handicap. drew a field of 124 Riders. The ”OPPY” held ,in memory of Rochester born, Sir Hubert Opperman, one of Australias greatest cyclists, finishing 18th. in the 1928 Tour De France, and in 1931, after having several accidents, finished 12th. Later on that year he won the prestigious Paris-Brest-Paris [at 1166km. the longest race in the world]. He went on to win many Austalian Classics, and Central Victorian Veterans were proud to present this “Classic” event.

The course, starting at Rochester, headed south to Elmore, across to Colbinabbin, back north to Corop, then back to Rochester. The field was divided into thirteen bunches, with the sole Limit rider starting 47min. in front of Scratch, the remaining bunches at various intervals in between. The conditions were warmer than expected, and riders would be facing cross winds most of the way. All groups got off to a good start. Scratch caught the 2min. bunch after about 15 km., then, continuing their charge, picked up 3rd. scratch on the run back to Rochester. Meanwhile towards the front of the field, the Limit rider was caught by the three rider second limit group, and at the 40km. mark, it looked as if second limit had the race won. However further back the move was on from the 10min. group, picking up the 12min. group at the 28km. mark, this combined group catching the 14min. bunch at Colbinabbin, and although a number of riders were dropped off, there were still 30 riders streaming towards the line.

The second limit group was finally caught at about the 50km. The 8min. bunch was down in numbers, due to a few scratchings, and struggled to find a good rhythm. They were caught by a fast moving 6min. bunch on the Bendigo-Murchison Road, driving the combined group at a faster pace, passing many stragglers from the bunches ahead. They were in sight of the combined 10, 12 and 15min. groups with 5km. to go but couldn’t bridge the gap, finishing a couple of hundred metres behind the winning group, and about the same distance in front of Scratch.

It was the large combined group that was heading for victory, with Graeme Pollard winning, in a time of 1hr. 37min. 35secs., an average of 40kmh.[14m] CV, just ahead of Craig Halliday 2nd. 56km O'BRIEN CONTRACTING Open Handicap - Woodstock

The O’Brien Contracting 56km. Handicap at Woodstock, drew an entry of 161 riders. The race, hosted by the Central Veterans, was one of the Victorian Veteran Cycling Council’s State Events, and riders came from many parts of the State to contest the first “Open” of the season. The riders were divide into 15 groups, with Limit on 33 minutes, with the other groups spaced at intervals between Limit and Scratch.

The course took the riders through Newbridge to Tarnagulla, then over to Laanecoorie, back down the Maldon Road to Newbridge, then heading home, over the last leg, to Newbridge. The Limit group, which included riders from Melbourne and Geelong, got off to a strong start. It was good conditions for racing, little wind, but fairly warm. However it seemed that everyone was evenly matched, it changed slightly when Scratch caught the 2min. 15 sec. bunch between Newbridge and Tarnagulla. It was at the front of the field that the situation was changing, The second Limit group, which had started 4.5 mins, behind Limit, caught them, just as they were going through Laanecoorie, the remaining four Limit riders doing their best to hang on.

The 4.5 min. group of Greg. Chapman, Evelyn Keetlar, and Kay Huggins were working smoothly, the others just hanging in. The turn into the last 12km. stretch from Newbridge is always the great test, with riders tiring, and change overs getting a little bit ragged. However about 5km. to go the three riders at the front made a decisive break, leaving the others standing. The riders that were left were, shortly afterwards overtaken, first by the 28.5min group, then the 24.5min. group, both groups trying to pull in the three riders out in front. It was not to be, in a sprint for the line, Greg. Chapman had a great win, in a time of 1hr.35min. 27secs., an average of 35kmh., followed by Evelyn Keetelar and Kay Huggins.

The route was north to Bridgewater, turn back due south to llanelly, then back across to Newbridge.

A grade headed off first, the large group working well together, with most riders managing to hold on. Justin Mollison and Paul Volk made an early break, but soon returned to the bunch. The pace was steady until J. Mollison had another try about the 4km. mark, riding strongly away from the bunch, however to no avail, being overtaken, about 200 metres from the line. It was all about position sprinting for the line, with Paul Dalton making a supreme effort to lead Brett Williams and Rod Robbins over the line, in a time of 57min. 04 secs., an average of 40kmh.

The group of 17 B grade riders basically stuck together for the most of the ride, with no real attempts to breakaway. It was therefore a large bunch that lined up, jockeying for places over the last 200 metres, with Mal Balnaves taking first place, having the power to outsprint Noel Knight and Craig Halliday, in a time of 1hr. 57secs., an average of 37.5kmh.

The C grade followed, with a fast pace being set, causing a few riders to drop off early, again it was position that was important, with a dozen riders going flat out from the 300 metre mark. It was Trevor Pell that led the field in a tight finish, leading Pat Pontell and Carl Louchard over the line, in a time of 1hr. 2min. 50 secs., an average of 36kmh.

The relatively small group of seven D grade riders was content to work together most of the way, it was not until the Llanelly crossing that Peter O’Brien pushed away up the “Wee Brae”, catching the group by surprise, however the bunch stayed together, with about 4km. to go. Once again it was all about position going to the line, with Alan Sandford leading Ricky Mitchell and Greg. Chapman over the line, in a time of 1hr. 13mins. 50secs., an average of 31kmh.

56km RUFELL FAMILY JEWELLERS Handicap - Woodstock

The Ruffell Family Jewellers 56km. Handicap at Woodstock, turned out to be another club favourite, with sixty riders lining up for the start. The course took the riders through Newbridge, on to Tarnagulla, across to Laanecoorie, then back to Woodstock. The handicapper divided the field into ten groups, with Limit starting twenty-eight minutes ahead of Scratch, and the other groups on, 2.5; 4; 6; 8; 10; 13; 16; and 22 minutes.

Limit started off steadily, working well together, with A. Stanford and Ros Ogilvie controlling the pace. Scratch were riding strongly, but new they needed something special to pull in the field. They finally caught the 2.5 minute bunch just after Laanecoorie, from there it was all hard work. The 4 and 6 minute groups came together with 12kms. to go, meanwhile the 8minute group was making an impression on the field, catching the 10minute group just 16kms. into the race, then pulling in the 13minute group at Laanecoorie, the strongest riders in the enlarged group set a keen pace, finally catching the 16minute group with 7km. to go.Meanwhile Di Jane had made a surprise break-away from the front, and was pushing hard to maintain her lead. The finish was less than 5km. ahead when the stalwarts of the 22 and 28 minute groups were pulled in, and the large group lined the finish up for their last effort.

In a tight finish Tim Noonan, in a time of Ihr. 29m 4secs, in his first official ride with the Club, took the honours, from Leigh Anne Dynon and Mal Balnaves, followed by a mass of riders, all striving for a place.

35km Club Handicap - Woodstock

The 35km. Club Handicap attracted a field of forty-one riders, which, considering there were twenty-three members contesting the Goulburn Valley fifty-six km. handicap at Dookie, was a pleasing turn out. The home course was Power’s Road, along the Maldon Road to Newbridge, then the final twelve kilometre leg back to Woodstock. The handicapper divided the field into seven groups, Limit off 19minutes, with the others off, 2; 3 .5; 5; 7; 9; and 12 minutes.

Limit got off to a bad start, but finally got into a steady rhythm. The run down to the Maldon Road was relatively easy, and all groups maintained a fast pace, however the turn towards Newbridge, with a blustery headwind, slowed the groups down, making it that bit more difficult to maintain a good rhythm. All bunches had held together to the twenty-two kilometer mark at Newbridge, but the time gaps between each bunch was considerably shorter, and Scratch had caught second scratch. At this stage, the three remaining riders in Limit, had a two minute lead over second limit, and a five minute lead over Scratch.

This last leg from Newbridge was to be the decider, with Scratch powering through the field, and with the help of the cross-tail wind, leaving many riders in its wake, who were unable to hold on to the hectic pace. Scratch closed to within forty seconds of the Limit riders, but the Limit riders held it together, giving Jack Corry,in a time of 1hr. 9mins. an average speed of 30.4kmh, an extra reason to celebrate his 80th. birthday, the Scratch riders were sprinting to take the fastest time, with Justin Mollison edging out Andrew Hayhow, to take the honours.

47km BART 'N' PRINT Handicap - Woodstock

The BART n’ PRINT 47km. handicap at Woodstock, proved very popular with sixty-two riders contesting the event. It was the home course, down Power’s Road, the long leg back to Newbridge, back past the clubhouse to the Maryborough Road, then the six kilometre leg back to the finish.

Handicapper Dale Lowe had his work cut out to balance the field, but his division into nine groups, proved successful. The Limit group was given a twenty minute start on Scratch, with the other groups off, 2; 4; 6; 8; 10; 12 and 15 minutes.

The Limit bunch led off strongly, with Ricky Mitchell and Di Jane setting the pace. The rear of the field was moving smoothly, with Scratch catching second scratch just before Newbridge, then, this combined bunch caught third scratch half-way to Woodstock, and continued to reel in the stragglers as the headed for the final turn. However it seemed that the ten minute bunch was the one to watch, catching the twelve minute bunch close to Newbridge, continuing strongly, and reeling in the fifteen minute bunch followed by the limit group, before the clubhouse. This large bunch was losing riders quickly, and with nine kilometers to go, was down to about six riders.

Gary Leech and Richard Verkuylen had been pushing the pace in the ten minute bunch, were getting the benefits of their early efforts. In a sprint to the finish Gary Leech took the honours, followed by; R. Verkulen; S. Auld; G. Lockwood; T. O’Brien; P. Robertson; R. Gilbey; M. Lavery; D. Hare; and in tenth place B. Goldberg. First female riders F. Medina and A. O’Brien; Fastest time A. Pascoe.

38km Handicap - Newbridge

The Central Victorian Veteran’s Cycling Club took advantage of a lull in Saturday’s wet weather to conduct a 38 kilometre race at Newbridge. The course had to be changed to avoid a fallen tree and floodwaters on the Llanelly to Bridgewater Road. Instead, the field headed up the Bridgewater-Maldon Road before turning around a few kilometres before Bridgewater for the run back to Newbridge and a loop around Llanelly before finishing up back at Newbridge.

Nineteen riders reached the starting line despite some wet roads on the way out from Bendigo and faced surprisingly good conditions with little rain and no flooded roads on the altered course. The handicapper opted for four groups with scratch giving starts of four, nine and fifteen minutes. The head wind and a couple of punctures saw all time gaps cut significantly on the road towards Bridgewater but it wasn’t until Newbridge that the front three bunches all came together, but still leading the two remaining scratch riders by a couple of hundred metres on the climb towards Llanelly.

The scratch riders made contact on the climb out of Llanelly and were perfectly placed for the sprint to the line after a quick breather, with Justin Mollison (scratch) comfortably taking first and fastest ahead of Geoff Bennett (scratch) 2nd, Leigh-Anne Dynon (4 min) 3rd, Gary Leech (4 min) 4th and Ricky Lovell (4 min) 5th. Fran Medina was first unplaced lady.

Next week’s race is the February Feature Race sponsored by BART”n’PRINT over 47 km at Woodstock. Corner stewards are Martyn HAMPSON, Peter HAYES, Andrew HAYHOW, Di JANE and Gary JOHNSTONE.

CENTRAL VIC WINDSCREENS Graded Criteriums - Mayfair Park

A-GRADE
1st

Andrew Pascoe

The prospect of hot weather couldn’t deter 48 Central Victorian Veterans Cycling Club riders fronting up on Sunday morning for a series of graded criteriums sponsored by Central Victorian Windscreens around the tight 900 metres Mayfair Park circuit.

After watching the Bendigo Cycling Club’s A-graders ripping up the course, the Vets sent out 16 riders in C grade for the 20 minutes plus three laps, and while they didn’t generate quite the same top-end speed, they matched the young guns for enthusiasm and endeavour. The field was evenly matched and nobody was able to put any meaningful gap into the bunch until the end of the race . With only one or two dropping off, most of the bunch was together at the bell lap and the race came down to the final few hundred metres. Sandy Agnoletto managed to hold off Jenny Farrow in the final sprint to take the win, with Bruce Tonkin well clear of the rest of the field taking third place.

B Grade was the biggest field of the day when 19 riders faced the starter for the 30 minutes plus 3 laps. None of the early breaks was successful as the field didn’t let anyone get away for long, although when Dave Maltby got clear in his first ride back after a break the field had a few nervous moments. Once again the race was all together with a couple of laps to go until Craig Halliday and Chris Chambers broke clear in the last lap and had a ding-dong tussle in the race to the line, with Craig inching ahead in the last few metres. Leigh-Anne Dynon finished strongly to take third place.

The A-graders put on the best race of the day with a smaller field but plenty of riders willing to take a chance. Carl Harris jumped out right from the start, looking as fresh as a daisy despite having gone around with the Bendigo Club only an hour earlier. He was brought back to the field after a few laps, when Arnie Lindsay had a go at pinching his own prize money, opening up a reasonable gap before being joined by Barry Jane, Brett Fisher and Glen Farrow. Paul Dalton was the next to chance his arm and he was joined by Glenn again, but the rest of the bunch wasn’t going to let them go and they were hauled in after a few laps. Glen Farrow punctured but managed to get back into the race despite one of the slowest wheel changes ever recorded in cycling history, master-minded by a certain former club president who managed to sprint in the wrong direction after being handed a wheel grabbed off the wrong bike. By the time this mess was sorted out the race only had a couple of laps to go, and Glenn was back on the sidelines with mechanical problems when Geoff Bennett opened up a meaningful break. Andrew Pascoe jumped out of the pack in pursuit, followed by Barry Jane and Carl Harris. Andrew went straight past Geoff to go into the final lap with a big lead which only got bigger, the winning margin opening up to the length of the straight. Geoff Bennett hung on to take second place just ahead of Carl Harris in third, followed by Barry Jane and the remnants of a by-now shattered peloton.

Next week’s race is a 38 kilometre event at Newbridge, commencing at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Corner stewards are Nick GATES, Russell GILBEY, Howard HALL, Ken HAMILTON and Wendy BENNETT. This is an opportunity to show our support for one of the communities badly affected by floods so please make the effort to get out there.

52km BOLTON'S OFFICE NATONAL Handicap - Emu Creek

The Central Victorian Veterans launched their 2011 season by contesting the Bolton’s Office National January Feature Race in oppressive conditions on Sunday morning around the tough Emu Creek circuit. Forty-three riders tackled the 52 km distance journey which took them from the Emu Creek Tennis courts to Sedgwick Road via Storey’s Road, over the Gooseneck and back to Emu Creek via Axe Creek Road and the exchange hill – twice.

The handicapper opted for a large scratch bunch. Nine scratch riders chased eight off second scratch with a three minute advantage, and in front of them were smaller groups at 2, 2,3, 9 and 3 minute gaps. Lone limit rider Dave Keith had another five minutes start but faced a big challenge to hold off the riders behind him around the undulating course.

The humidity, heat and Christmas excesses affected all the bunches right from the start. The scratch bunch started shedding riders within a few kilometres and caught parts of the disintegrating second and third scratch groups before the end of the first lap. The story was the same up ahead. All bunches lost riders early on and many called it quits after the first time around. The race came together early in the second lap except for Greg Chapman who held a 3 minute advantage over the peloton with 13 kilometres to go. His brave efforts proved to be in vain when he was swallowed up in the last few kilometres by the remaining scratch and second scratch riders who controlled the pace in the run home.

Geoff Bennett (3 min) caught the pack napping and jumped away in the last few hundred metres to steal victory in 1 hr 20 min 28 seconds from the fast-finishing Trevor Watchman ten metres behind, recording fastest time of 1 hr 17m 28 seconds. Andrew Pascoe (scr) came in 3rd followed by Mark Casey (scr), Tim Fraser (3 min), Barry Jane (scr), David Cheal (scr), Darren McKellar, (6 min), Greg Chapman (22 min) and Paul Dalton (3 min). First unplaced lady was Wendy Bennett.

Next week’s races are 35 kilometre graded scratch races at Woodstock on Sunday morning commencing 10:00 a.m. Corner Stewards are Neil Blakely, Graeme Butcher, Peter Casey, Greg Chapman and David Colwell.
