Today's race at Bagshot was sponsored by Ric McIntosh aka Race Caller.
Our trip out that side of town has become one of the most popular races on the calendar, even though the 57 km circuit is always demanding. The strong field included try rider Tim Phillips and mountain biker Steve Bilton. Despite stumping up the cash, Ric didn't get any favours and set off with second scratch, four minutes in front of scratch and chasing big gaps out to the 40 minute limit markers. The back markers' task became even harder when the eight, 14 and 20 minute bunches all came together around the left turn into the Kamarooka-Huntly Road and set out in pursuit of the two limit riders. Despite dropping a chain on the last hill, Di Jane, accompanied by Steven Bright, still held a good lead coming into the final run home. Di (40 min.) sensed the danger behind and took off from her companion and rode strongly to the line to record a comfortable win. The big bunch behind them collared Steve just 300 metres from the finish, with Tim Phillips winning the bunch sprint but ineligible for the prize money, so Terry Schintler (8 min) was officially second, followed by John Weir (8 min), Shane Thompson (8 min), Cheryle Barker (14 min) David Hare (14 min) and Pam Robertson (14 min). Steve Bright hung on gamely for 8th. Scratch had caught second scratch at the 40 km mark but, despite working hard through the Kamarooka Hills, couldn't quite overhaul the leading bunch. Joe Stolz ran 9th and recorded fastest time with Matt Grealy filling 10th spot.
