Bendigo Bank sponsored today's 52 km Dash for Cash at Newbridge.
Unfortunately Martin Banfield wasn't on hand to dish out the largesse but Damian Hughes filled in admirably, including stepping up to drive the scratch bunch. A great field of 37 riders had starts of up to 30 minutes over scratch with all bunches around five to seven riders. The handicapper had a pearler of a day - the earliest catches were well into the second lap when second scratch caught third after 35 km, and the rest of the field out front came together in the last kilometers as scratch finally made contact with the big bunch with just three kms to go. Only Andrea Wilson was surviving but her gallant effort came to an end with just 500 metres to go when several of the bunch stirred things up by jumping off the front. The slight uphill 300 meters from the line sorted the sprinters from the stayers and Brent Gibson (scratch) justified his no. 1 ranking in taking the win and fastest time of 1 hr 17 min 32 sec at 40.7 km/hr from an in-form Paul Dynon (3 min), Murray Rankin (3 min), David Bakes (scr.), Brad Geyer (scr.), Brad Steigenberger (8 min), Rob Gibson (6 min), Gavin Hill (scr.) David Cripps (3 min) and Ian Stringer (3 min.)
