23 hardened riders turned up to the Bendigo Weekly Scratch race aggregate at Newbridge today.
Strong southerly winds combined with rain made conditions very difficult over the 54km Club Championship circuit held over 2 laps.
A grade, although small in numbers was a quality field with Hudson Crothersin contention for the aggregate setting a cracking pace putting the inform Peter Cavallaro under pressure early. With Crothers, Brent Gibson and Leigh Wallace keeping the pressure on for the entire race they lost Cavallaro at the end of the first lap. This meant it was a 3 man sprint to the line with Crothers taking his 3 win of the series ahead of Gibson 2nd and Leigh Wallace in 3rd place.
B Grade had the biggest field of the day with 11 starters how ever it was soon to be depleted after Brett Williams and Terry Schintler puncturing on the first lap then on lap 2 David Cripps found the going too tough, then the inform Ian Stringer punctured 13km from home. With a kilo to go Shane Thompson led the balance of the field towards the finish, however Chris Draper proving his win in the criteriums 2 weeks ago was no fluke, getting the win ahead of Andrew Berry and the ever improving Robert Gartside in 3rd place.
C Grade was an even affair with Ray Colwell also in contention for the Bendigo Weekly aggregate race set a cracking pace. Nicky Rose and Wendy Bennett were up against some inform male riders in the field. With all 5 riders contesting the sprint at the end of the race, Ray Colwell showed his good form to beat the mountain goat Greg Chapman 2nd and the ever improving Tom de Vries in 3rd place.
D Grade, although small in numbers was a cracker of a race with the experience of Ken Lacey and the inline Sprint King, Jim Field and the improving Ross Ogilvie after a long lay off in the winter. In the sprint it was Jim Field showing a clean pair of heels to Ken Lacey 2nd and Ross Ogilvie 3rd.
The final presentation for the day was the Male and Female winners of the the Bendigo Weekly aggregate award. The Male winner with 23 points was Hudson Crothers having had 3 wins and a second for the series.
The female winner was Di Jane with 15 points having 3, 2nd places for the series. Congratulations to both winners and big thanks to our sponsor to this hotly contested aggregate event.
