Back at the Brickworks on Murphy Street this morning for crits, and 39 riders turned up in bright sunshine but a stiff southerly to contend with.
A Grade was off first and Leigh Wallace tried his traditional early break, then, not long after he was traditionally caught, Jo Stolz tried a similar move with a similar outcome. The reduced bunch sprint was won by Marty Banfield narrowly over Peter Cavallaro with Jo Stolz not far away in third. The B grade race saw unsuccessful breaks by Arnie Lindsay and Carl Harris before they all came back together for the last lap. Leon Yeates jumped away up the small hill and shattered the field, with only Carl getting to and then passing Leon for the win, Gavin Hill riding strongly into 3rd behind them. C Grade was the biggest field and most exciting race with Geoff Bennett, Mick Anderson and Ricky Lovell getting away early and holding off the field for most of the race. Mick eventually dropped back to the pack but Geoff and Ricky powered on to finish in that order after Geoff got the jump on the last climb. Mick Anderson beat Neil Andrews home for third. D Grade was another ripper with lots of breakaways and a fair bit of attrition as riders lost touch. Cheryle Barker moved clear on the last lap but couldn't hold on. Tom de Vries stormed to the lead on the downhill run to the line and thought he had it won, only to be pipped by first time rider Steve Ligoli with Steve Baines in third. There was a bit of confusion in E Grade about how many laps to go and some riders mixed up in other grades, but in the end it was Ken Lacey who out-sprinted Terry O'Brien for the win and Toni Lindsay capping off a great ride for third.
