We were back at Laanecoorie this week, this time for 51 km of scratch races in pretty damned good weather.
There were a few bleary eyes in the fields due to the grueling schedule of Le Tour watching which seems to be also biting into training time, hence the low numbers. A grade consisted of a lot of wannabes and couple of genuines who, luckily for the rest of the field, played nicely, apart from a couple of mid-race surges. Almost the full field headed into the final 2 kilometers before Brent Gibson and Leigh Wallace jumped, shattering the pack. Brent took the win from Leigh with Murray Rankin hanging on to their coat tails for third. David Hare and Ricky Lovell were the principal animators of B grade, David charging off the front a couple of times early in the race and Ricky trying his luck later and holding a lead until the bunch ran him down for the sprint. In a tight finish, Robert Gartside huffed and puffed his way to a narrow victory from the irrepressible John Weir and the repressible Ricky Lovell. Toni Lindsay, Ken Lacey and Di Jane all had a shot at getting away in C grade but none of the moves stuck, and, with Steven Bright grinding away in the 12 cog due to a broken cable and a couple of others out the back, just four lined up for the sprint which was won by Ken from Di and Toni.
