This evening's Dale Lowe Signs Summer Series handicap was tinged with sadness with the news of Hugh Week's death earlier today.
The committee decided to continue with the race in Hugh's memory, knowing that he would have demanded that it went ahead. Vale Hugh Weeks. Riders and officials observed a minute's silence before proceedings got underway in between bursts of sunshine and torrential downpours. The field size was reduced by the conditions but bolstered by several new members, mainly in the back half of the field, so the three limit markers had their work cut out. But work they did, and they weren't overhauled by the nine minute bunch until the last part of the race. The nines were looking good until they were swallowed up by the three surviving scratch riders and second scratch inside the last kilometre. Brent Gibson (scr.) proved too strong in the run to the line to win and record fastest time from Brad Geyer (scr.). Gavin Hill (scr.), Sean Hubbard (3 min), Darren McKellar (3 min) and Greg Chapman (9 min.) all capped off great rides to claim the next four placings. Michelle Francis scored a personal victory in her sprint to the line.
