The Vets raced criteriums at Tarnagulla today as part of the "Strictly Vintage" festival. We do most of our racing in Loddon Shire which is a strong supporter and sponsor of the club and it was a great opportunity to return the favour to some degree.
The fields were small but the racing was all quality with A Grade being bolstered by visitor Paul Beretta from Geelong up against the likes of Marty Banfield, Tony Byrne and Hudson Crothers. The new circuit featured a nasty little climb on the back straight which was the launching pad for several attacks during the 45 minutes of racing. Riders went out the back with monotonous regularity until only the four guns were left with 3 laps left. Martin Banfield took advantage of a slight hesitation by the others with half a lap to go and managed to stay away to the line ahead of Paul Beretta and Hudson Crothers. Shane Wall gave the rest of the B Grade field a lesson in consistency, grinding out lap after lap with only Prez Cheryle Barker able to stay with him for the full 30 minutes. Cheryle went past Shane on the finishing straight with Chris Draper holding on for third. Shane's run is sure to attract the attention of the stewards.
